  3. Re: How can you make Warre top bars without a table saw?

The simplest way to make Warre Hive frames is to take a standard Lang frame and cut a piece out of the middle of the top bar reducing it to the desired length, and then doweling the two pieces back...

I have a bee vac and when I do cut outs I vac all the bees off the comb first and then can take my time removing the comb, separating the honey comb from the brood comb, attaching just the brood comb...

Re: Extra drawn frames & swarm control

The beauty of running one size of box through out your whole apiary is that this problem does not arise. I run all 3/4 boxes for brood and honey supers and I always have spare drawn out frames. Also...
  7. Re: Found these in a barn--What are they? Need help with ID

This is the Japanese answer to the Warre hive. I have seen the same design on You Tube clips when Japanese beekeepers were harvesting their hives.

Re: Comb rotation - what do you do?

I run all 3/4 sizes boxes for brood and honey supers and this makes it very easy to rotate frames with combs every three or four years. Old brood frames are cleaned up and new foundation installed...

The most useful modification that I have made to my smoker, and make it easy to light , was to drill a small hole in the side of the main body just above the fire grate. Made a small flap of thick...

We would be interested in the specifications of your modified Warre, length, breadth and height , and your planned manipulations for the season.
  15. Re: What is the best advice when building a bee vac?

The best bee vac by far is the Bushkill Farms one on Robo's World.
Vac directly into a standard hive with provision for comb retrieval as well.
Has worked for me with very little bee losses...

Re: How do you "bait" your swarm traps?

I have found the best results using one or two old but clean brood comb frames, no honey as that could start a robbing frenzy, and a few drops of lemon grass oil at the entrance of the swarm trap....

    Re: Deep or shallow

If you are just starting out it would be worth considering using just one size of box and use all 6 5/8. This will give you much more flexibility when working your hives.
In the UK a beekeeper named...

  19. Re: Could the top part of langstroth frames be used as top bars?

I have found this method ideal if you want either just the top bar with end bars cut to any length you want ( to stop the bees fixing comb to the sides of the hive ) This will give you the required...
