Re: What's a typical nuc cost?

It's all local. I get $175 for a five frame deep, and have sold out already. There is a guy fifty miles or so from me selling five frame mediums nucs for $175, and he usually sells out also. I...

Re: feeding old Fruit jelly to bees

On one of the farms I where I keep my bees, the farmer found some old jelly his wife had put up years ago. Unknown to me, he set it out in front of the hives, with good intentions of course. I...

Re: Foundationless frames. Wire or not.

I don't wire mine. You just have to treat the frames as you would a top bar frame, until the bees attach the comb to the bottom bar. Just don't flip them around during inspection.

  5. Why is a medium sometimes called an Illinois super?

Call it winter boredom, but I can't find the answer to this question. Not that it really matters in the great big scheme of beekeeping questions. Like I said winter boredom!

Re: Making Extreme Spilts with 2 Frame Nucs

Tim really did nail it there. I did turn 19 hives into 80 one season, using queen cells. It was alot of work, ALOT of feeding, and tons of TLC. I don't think I want to try it again. My losses of...
  7. Kelley news letter says: don't feed your bees GMO sugar!

I glanced through the Walter Kelley news letter last night. One of their writers, a Phill Remick made this statement in response to a letter asking about the dangers of feeding bees GMO surgar.

    Re: When to split

Ditto what most of the other folks said: watch for the drones. Also remember that once a drone is born, it will not fly right out to the DCA looking for virgins. It takes a week or so before they...
  9. Is it mites, or the viruses they carry that kill a hive?

I am watching a few threads that have been started by the unfortunate bee keepers that are obvioulsy losing their hives to mites, it got me thinking (dangerous I know) Is it the mites themsleves...
  10. Shipping queen cells? How long will they survive?

I want to bring some new genetics into my apiariy. I want queen cells because I want them to mate with my local drones. Does anyone have a good line on 100 or so cells? I know there are a lot of...

    Re: Transition to Foundationless

Once they get one comb straight, the rest will follow. Maybe one or two frames with a starter strip to make sure they build straight. After that stand back and watch, they will draw it out faster...

    Re: Question about splits ???

No need to move your split. Just face the new hive entrance in a different direction. Your foragers will go back to the main hive. But your nurse bees will stay put with the split. There are lots of...

    Re: Switching to foundationless...maybe

Throw in my two cents for what it's worth. My whole operation is totally foundationless, and it was one of the best decisions I have made. But to clarify, I like drones, since I breed and sell...

Re: True definition of "overwintered nuc"

I did use cardboard, but the bees chewed through the air holes over night. I am using Jester boxes this year, more expensive but no bees flying everywhere on pickup day.

Re: True definition of "overwintered nuc"

I will charge $175 for an overwintered nuc in early April. As soon as the drones are flying, I will graft queens. The cells I will place in splits, they are usually back and laying around May. I...

Re: True definition of "overwintered nuc"

When I sell an overwintered nuc, I will charge a higher price for it. It is an established colony, proving it can make it through my local winter conditions. When I sell my late spring splits, that...

Re: Spring is on it's way!
