Re: What is this bee doing?

I don't know what she's doing but it's a great video. What did you record it with?

Re: Feral bees and beekeepers bees?

You might be able to find some semi-feral bees that have swarmed from a local beekeeper but I don't think there are any true feral colonys left. They've all died off....except for the Africanized...

    Re: Vinegar in sugar syrup

Heat it up enough that the sugar will dissolve but don't boil it. A few drops of vinegar won't hurt the solution but don't go crazy with it.

    Re: 2nd week: Queen cups?

I got three packages this year and everyone of them requeened. I let them do their thing, they know more about what they're doing than I do.
  6. Re: To Mow or Not to Mow-Near Hive-any opinion on this one

Aside from ants, roaches and spiders also like to make their homes in beehives. Nothing quite like opening the hive up and having a big roach jump out toward you.

Re: problem staring a new colony

How "raw" is the wood you used to build the hive? If it was just cut then perhaps you should let the wood dry out for a while before using it. Maybe they don't like the smell of newly cut wood.
  9. Can you give a new package too much old comb?

One of my hives died over the winter and left me with lots of left over comb (some brood, some honey, some empty). I froze all the comb after the die off to cleanse it of disease, etc. The new...

    Re: No queen again. HELP

I installed a package earlier this year and the queen died in her cage before the workers got her out. Found another queen and put her in the hive. When I checked three days later she was out. Now...
  12. Re: Spring time...one thing I didn't see coming- is this an annual event??

Before I started with my top bar hives I watched a lot of videos. There was one guy who worked his hives with no smoke and no protective equipment and I figured that if he could do that then I could...

    Re: 1st inspection question

Did the queen come in the box with the other bees? If so then they've had a while for them to accept her. If she came separately and you just introduced her on Wednesday then I'd wait another day...
  17. Re: Attracted to light and Untimate demise - Zombie Bees

Last summer I would have bees attracted to the kitchen light in the mornings. As soon as I got up and turned it on they would be climbing on the kitchen window. This was around 5am so it wasn't...

    Two New Queen Questions

I installed a package last weekend. Went in today to check on the queen and she was still in the cage but not moving. Opened the cage and set her out on top of the frames and she still didn't move....

Re: My smoker smoke may be too hot

This is off the topic of your question but I was wondering if you were planning to use a smoker when you were installing the bees? I've been told that's not a good idea.

Re: Funniest bee question ever asked

I get the hibernation quesion a lot. Never had the flying north comment. Now I know what to say when it comes up. One of the most difficult to explain is "How do they make a new queen?"

  24. Re: Ok to install packages anytime during day ?

This is one of those questions that if you asked three beekeepers you'd get four different answers. I was told to do it late afternoon. However, if your queen is still in her box I don't see why...
