Re: Cell protectors as escape cones?

They do not work. Even drones can come through them.

Re: Cell protectors as escape cones?

    Michael,

I was more wondering about using them to make an escape board. I have way to many and was looking to re-purpose them.

    #6 Hardware Cloth

Can bees get through #6 hardware cloth?

I want to use it below the #5 in my pollen traps, for the pollen to fall through, but keep the bees out of the trapped pollen.

Re: How many hives are "enough"?

In our area, I don't think you would have any problem getting rid of a few spare queens or swarms. There are always folks looking for bees, and regardless of your experience, they would be glad to...

    Nurse Bees in Overwintered Hives

Where do the nurse bees come from in overwintered hives? Do the older bees have the capability to return to brood feeding bees?

I though that only young bees had properly developed...

    Re: Split low on bees

    Build yourself a shaker box.

Nail a queen excluder on the bottom of a old hive body. Put the box on top of the hive you want to add brood to. Shake the bees into the box, the queen will get...

Re: Can I move the Queen to make a split?

Sure. Take the queen, some open and some emerging brood, some honey and pollen and move them away.

If you want the foragers, move the old hive away and leave the queen and new hive in the old...
  10. Re: Moving Frames Around and Other Newbie Questions

Hi John, fancy seeing you here.

    I'm assuming you're using 10 frame boxes.

Right now, I would avoid separating the brood with undrawn frames. Once it warms up a bit more (warm nights) you can...

    Re: Our first honey harvest

The first is always the best.

A word of advise though. You don't want to be extracting outside. Every bee in the neighborhood will be in your face.

Does your blade have too big clearance on your table insert? It's hard to see from the picture, but a zero clearance table insert should help.

It might also be from lowering the work into the...

    Re: They love my seedlings.

They have plenty of water. I have a chicken waterer out and they use it quite a bit.

I just filled it with potting soil. It seems they like that better than the rocks I have in it now.
