Re: What Percent of Hives Are Feral vs Kept

The pioneer work on breeding bees was done by Ludwig Armbruster. It is the mentor Brother Adam followed. Here is his writing (computer translated, but readable)

    He's a bee punisher. :D
  3. Re: How can I make hive boxes that are perfectly stackable-a necessary requirement.

Precise cut ends and a tool: a "right angle clamp". (Don't know how that translates into English...)

The right angle clamp ensures the corner to be...

    Re: comb production

A guy in Hungary produces ready to use wax combs, just like plastic drawn combs but made from beeswax. See:

  7. Re: red and orange liquid on the rear legs of a a bee or two

We had bright green and blue honey, too - from a candy and sweets factory where the bees were able to rob them. See newspaper article:...
  8. Re: red and orange liquid on the rear legs of a a bee or two

Do you have ripe cherries in your location?

Here some pictures of bees working apples:

  9. Re: red and orange liquid on the rear legs of a a bee or two

Could be. We also observed bees going for cherries fallen from the tree and about to rot. We had cells with red cherrie sap in the hives. Tasted like cherry. Tested it in a lab and it was indeed...
  10. Re: CAPA Report: 58% overwinter colony mortality in Ontario.

We have corn, corn and wait: some corn.

As Ian said, no reason to hang your head between your legs. I tilled some small patches and made my own...
  11. Re: CAPA Report: 58% overwinter colony mortality in Ontario.

@Ian: I spend a lot of time - night and day - on keeping bees. That's why they survive and thrive.

But be sure, if someone p*sses into my hives I will will point my finger right into the wound....
  12. Re: 2 small extractors instead of 1 big one?

Sure. You make nice creamed honey of it. You let it set hard in the drums, when filling it into glass jars, you warm the drum so the honey starts to liquify and then you use a special stirring...
  13. Re: CAPA Report: 58% overwinter colony mortality in Ontario.

Wow, that is so easy...don't understand why I didn't think of it...
  14. Re: CAPA Report: 58% overwinter colony mortality in Ontario.

Well, I work for real world solutions, because I need solutions now. Can't wait for politics. So what I do is to cooperate wih farmers and they don't use neonics, and my bees pollinate their crops....

    Re: brood nest position

I would reconfigure all the brood combs into one box, second from the bottom. It is good to have the broodnest compact. The bees backfill the broodnest on purpose with nectar and pollen. They eat the...
  16. Re: 2 small extractors instead of 1 big one?

Not just hive beetles. Honey with high fructose content hardens in the combs, like canola honey. Once pulled from the hive it can get rock solid in a day. Unextractable.

    Another piece.
  18. Re: 2 small extractors instead of 1 big one?

A second (spare) extractor saved my day today. Pulled honey and in the first round extracting the main extractor broke down. Could not repair it. Pulled out the second extractor and extracted the...

  20. Re: CAPA Report: 58% overwinter colony mortality in Ontario.

We already discussed it in another thread. I had losses to neonics and I have had it tested in labs. Neonicotinoids can be found in the pollen, bees and even in the honey. Back in 2008 we have had...

Re: What Percent of Hives Are Feral vs Kept

Since when? Ah, now I understand your signature about continued sickness. :)
  22. Re: Tried to stop robbing for seven days, but the robbers come back

Move the hive away and reduce entrance to one bee.

But: do not forget to place an empty hive at the old place or the robbers will be looking for other hives to rob. So place an empty hive at the...
  23. Re: What's the best way to get bees out of supers for extracting?

Don't forget to include a 4 gallon bucket in the patent. (Just keep the running gag running. Hope you don't take it too serious.)

    Re: extracting outdoors at night.

Put a strong foil or tarp on the floor of the kitchen. After extracting, simply fold the foil and you're done.
  25. Re: What's the best way to get bees out of supers for extracting?

Gave it a try and quickly knocked something up.
