Re: Cleaning Bee Suits & Veils....

After I wash and dry my veil (dome),I use heavy spray starch to stiffen it back up so it doesn't touch my face.
    Works pretty well.

When I was at the certification courses this spring, they had an ER doctor discuss the physiology of the bee sting. He is also a beek and said that he looks forward to the annual sting that causes...

Re: How is the sourwood so far?

Surprisingly, the bees did not do that much. The best hive only filled 1 1/2 supers. Part of my problem was that the bees had to draw out every frame in the supers. My other problem was that I...

The sourwood is done in North Georgia.
  5. Re: storing full frames of honey before extracting

They can store for years without extracting as long as rodents, bugs or trauma don't befall them.
I don't have a garage or honey shed to store my supers while waiting for extraction, so I bring them...
  6. Re: super slow motion educational bee film 2 mins long please watch

Awesome equipment. When you get some time, I would love to see a super slow motion of a bee collecting pollen. I have yet to see how the bee fills it's pollen basket.
    Thanks for sharing!

I tried sugar spray during a dearth...... never again! They were fine until I lifted the first frame out of the box. They lit into me and stung me 7 times. Three even found their way into my veil...

    Re: Honey Bound

They had 2 undrawn frames in their top box, so I don't think I was too late. They have not touched the honey super yet. in a few weeks, we will be in a dearth, so I was wondering if the bees were...

    Re: World of Beekeeping Video?

I bought it. Its pretty basic but since I was a newbee, I found it interesting. He needs to cover diseases/pests to make it a more informative video.

I have a hive that is definitely honey bound.
It is a swarm that I caught in April and it is now in a 10 frame double deep and doing great. There were 2 undrawn frames in the top box. Each...

Re: Did we miss tulip poplar this year?

We get a tulip poplar flow in late April and early May but I can never see the blooms. Presumably because they bloom at the top of the tree instead of the lower branches. I look for the...

    Re: Queen cups

Don't get too nervous, too quickly. I would give it another 2 weeks before starting to get concerned.
Even then, don't buy a queen but get a frame of eggs from another hive and put it in. If...

Re: setting up a new bee yard

I get damaged asphalt shingles from roofing companies and put them under my hive stands. It works great for preventing weeds from growing up to the hives. You should be able to get the shingles...

    Re: poor looking bees

Could you have been looking at newly hatched pupae? They have a whitish, grey appearance when they first emerge. You should be able to tell if there is a starving issue if there are no stores in...

It sounds like you are in a Drone Congregation Area. They say the drones find the same spot year after year although they don't know what causes them to be drawn to the area. Virgin queens fly...

    Re: Screened heat!

SHB's can get in through #8 screen, so any opening larger than that will let in SHB.

    Re: Screened heat!

Do you mean across the whole entrance? If you use #4 sized screen, you are going to knock the pollen off the workers and trap the queen and drones inside the hive.

    Re: Homemade Topfeeder

Its just another way of accomplishing the same task. I tried the ziplock baggie method but didn't like having to throw them away after one use.
