  1. Re: Installing packages: 2# 3# 4#, what is too much?

There's probably a separate question to this: with and without drawn comb.

I'll mention it's probably a bit early to expect swarms in Wisconsin too.

I wouldn't be too hopeful of anything. Their reviews here don't sound too good:

Re: New Packages - Too Much Honey?

I'd reiterate this: keep a very close eye on them and be prepared to add a box soon. They will take off much much quicker with the drawn frame and honey than you might be ready for. I had swarm...

Re: Bee Intallation, can it be this easy?

That's more or less what I do. The second time I did packages, I tried shaking em out without any protection and managed to piss them off royally getting stung about 20 times in the process. Since...

Re: starting new small cell hives

In my experience they draw them out pretty well but you do have to watch. Sometimes they draw out half of it perfectly then get to an injection molded divot in the PF120 and decide to do something...

    Re: Wooden Hive Top Feeder

That's what I used. One thing I'd mention is to be sure to let your spar varnish cure for a week or so. I put on the silicone caulk too soon and it never cured. Was a bear to scrub out and replace.

When I saw heather, I'm reminded of those IWF videos. I googled it and found one here (Heathland Beekeeping - 7 - Harvest of Heather Honey in a Skep Apiary):

Re: Question - all 8 frame mediums

If it's 8 frame mediums, that's probably fine in your region. In my neck of the woods, the general rule is 5 8 frame mediums will get me through the winter.

That said, as tsmullins said, it will...

Re: Strong hive / Weak hive

Were they capped queen cells? Or just queen cells. My bees seem to like making swarm cells but haven't used them yet (knock on wood). If there is a larvae in there, that's when you have to start...

I'm pretty sure many of us have been pretty sure we were the biggest idiot in the history of beekeeping at some point so I'd say you're in decent company.

    Re: Virgin Queen

I'd make sure to get her some attendants asap or she'll probably die very soon. I'd think you could put her in with frames of newly emerging brood and honey and that'd be a safe bet to start a split.
  14. Re: When to add a second box when using drawn comb?

Re: Hive swarmed (I think), is this normal?

I think it's going to depend on the timing of the alleged swarm. Do you think they just swarmed or do you think they swarmed 2 weeks ago? If they just swarmed you should have capped brood, maybe...
  16. Re: First full inspection.....newbee seeking input

I can't tell from the resolution of the photo but I can say it's more likely than the first photo circled just by the quantity of bees. The queen is usually on a much more populated frame.

    Package with drawn comb

I've done packages before with no comb. This year I got a few 2# packages and put them on drawn comb (with a fair amount of honey on them).

I'm just curious if there are a different set of rules...
  18. Re: Purchased Nuc with Many Dead Bees and No Queen

Doesn't seem likely that the queen will mate up in MI at this time of year. So I'd be worried a supercedural cell will do no good regardless.

  20. Re: Newbie and acquiring 3 hives from a newbie. Help!!??

Also make sure if you move them a short distance (less than 2 miles?) that you trigger a reorientation or the bees will end up back at their original home site (with no box to get to).
