    Re: Bee Feeder Question

I have at least a dozen of these feeders and the only issue I have found is that it helps to caulk the edges of the screen so bees can't sneak into the area where the sugar solution is. I like these...

Re: How to make sugar syurp

1 tsp of HBH per quart will keep the syrup from molding for a long time. I've kept syrup in containers from fall to spring with no issues with this amount. I don't have mold issues using HBH, or...

Re: Mann Lake budget hive bodies?

Don't quote me, but I think Lauri ordered something like 500 of these this year. If you search her posts you'll see that she's happy with the budget quality.

    Re: Box's sticking together

I agree. I use the cheapest petroleum jelly I can find. It doesn't wash away if it gets wet, and if it's safe for us, it's good enough for the bees.

    Re: Bees died :(

I recommend you check Randy Oliver's site at "http://scientificbeekeeping.com/varroa-management/" for info on varroa management. I would venture to say that if your packages are coming from Georgia,...

    Re: Bees died :(

You don't mention in any of your posts if you tested for mites. I would not treat for American Foulbrood, or tracheal mites, with no evidence of an issue. As for varroa, that's a different issue. ...

    Re: Dogs and Beehives?

I have 9 hives inside my fenced yard and two dogs that can go wherever they want when I let them out. They learn to stay away from the bees, and they have never been ganged up on by my bees. I'm...
  8. Re: Taking the fight to Varroa mites and SHB right away!

Grease patties don't work. Go over to http://scientificbeekeeping.com/varroa-management/ and read what Randy Oliver has to say about varroa management. No point in wasting your time with things...

    Re: Veil only...no suit. Thoughts?

When I started I only had a veil, but after a while I found it to be a pain to put it on so bees couldn't get in. Now I use a jacket. I just find it so much easier to use, and when you get a mean...

    Re: Carniolan Queens

I agree with TWall. I have gotten several queens from Tim Arheit at Honeyrunapiaries. The NWC queens are top notch, as well as the service. If you want to try NWC queens, I don't think you'll find...

You could also cut down deep foundation to fit the frames.

The facebook page is actually "Hott Apiary". Search Facebook with the space between Hott and Apiary and you will find it.

Re: Hauling in pollen in Northeast PA. !!

My bees are working the hellebores, witch hazels, snow drops, and some other minor bulbs that I can tell at this time. Pollen.com says maple is a major pollen source for me, but I don't see them. I...

    Re: Swap boxes or not?

I almost always swap boxes because I usually find the bottom box empty of honey and brood in early spring. This and early supering has helped to minimize swarming.

Are there Board members for your local club? A member of my club was in the same situation, so he contacted one of the Board members of the club and when we met as a board I agreed to contact him...

    Re: Total loss

That's a tough day! If it was just the weather that knocked them over, just gather it up and save it for spring where the wax moths won't get it. Order your nucs, or packages now, and plan on how...

    Re: remove bottom box?

I would put the bottom box on top of the other box and move the undrawn frames more into the center. I would then begin feeding 1 to 1 if it's warm enough there (at least in the 40's). This should...

Re: Florida Queen Bees & Honey

One didn't make it. I blame myself for not giving her enough time to build up the numbers before it got cold around here. The other hive looks fine. It's been a tough winter here, and it hasn't...

    Re: hot hive requeening

I had the same issue with one of mine. I got a friend to come over and we suited up head to toe. I would pull a frame and look for the queen. If I didn't find her, I'd hand the frame to my friend....

    ApiShield Asian Hornet Trap

Anyone read the ABJ Extra about this trap that catches Asian hornets? I'm wondering if this thing would work for hive beetles? It sounds like a nice idea since it requires no bait.
