  1. Does a Queenless Colony Create More Honey?

That's my question. Does a queenless colony switch to honey-making mode in the absence of a queen and new brood?

I have a 3-deep colony that became queenless about a month ago and I was only able...
  2. Remove supersedure cells before adding mated queen?

I have a colony that's been queenless for probably two weeks. I discovered a few capped supersedure cells a week ago. I was planning to leave them alone but I unexpectedly have a mated queen coming...
  3. Bees exit hive in a hurry after a few puffs of smoke

I've noticed the bees in one of my hives have become unusually sensitive to smoke in the past month. I use as little smoke on my bees as possible, but whenever I get down to the bottom deep in this...

Calm queenless hives? Do I combine?

I inspected one of my Langstroth hives yesterday for the first time this year and discovered it was empty of brood. I reversed the deep brood boxes on it about 3 weeks ago, but was unable to do a...

3/4-inch or 7/8-inch lumber for supers?

I live in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean where at least 1/3 of my beekeeping costs come from shipping in heavy hive components (e.g., unassembled supers). I want to save some money by building my...
  6. Re: Back Yar Queen Rearing with Limited Drones in Area

    What browser are you using?

(I'm also following your discussion with Jeff. I plan to get into queen rearing next year, after I see how Jeff does it.)
  7. Re: Back Yar Queen Rearing with Limited Drones in Area

This is the second time I've heard about some kind of drug info showing up on a page from my blog. I haven't been able to replicate the problem myself, but I'll look into it.

Honey Leaking From Hive in Winter

I have four hives that I thought were packed with honey, but the bees in all the hives have been clustering over the top bars at least for the past few weeks, so I decided to play it safe and feed...

    What makes honey cloudy?

I harvested honey for the first time this past summer. Only two hives and it wasn't a great summer for anyone in my area. Just under 50 pounds between the two hives. I had about 50% foundationless...

    Re: Mouse-Proofing Mesh?

Good point. I have my stapled on at the moment. I should probably fold it into the entrance just to be safe. Thanks.

    Re: Mouse-Proofing Mesh?

Yeah, it looks like half-inch mesh is fine. I couldn't remember where I first heard about it, but I found the source. Michael Palmer talks about using the mesh at the 16-minute mark in the "Over...

    Mouse-Proofing Mesh?

Does anyone know if half-inch mesh works well for mouse-proofing hives during the winter?

I used a Canon PowerShot SX20 IS. I cropped it (or digitally zoomed in) afterwards using Vegas Movie Studio 9.
  15. Drones Being Expelled from the hive (VIDEO)

I thought I'd post this for new beekeepers (like me) who haven't seen drones being expelled from a hive before. We all hear about it, but I think this video from one of my hives is a good example of...

    Re: What's that piping sound?

I don't think I rolled the queen during the last inspection, though I could have. (I'm converting all our brood boxes to 9 frames next spring.) I only pulled a few frames from each of the 2 deeps. ...

    Re: What's that piping sound?

I haven't checked the hive for supercedure cells yet. Bad weather and other things I have to do will prevent me from inspecting the hive for another four or five days. If the original queen was...

You might have to turn up your speakers, but there is some distinctive piping sounds in there. Some other beekeepers got back to me and said a queen piping has a more urgent sound that goes on...

    Re: Stop feeding pollen patties?

I agree. I don't want to feed them, but if I have to feed them, it's good to know how to do it. I also have raw pollen that I mix in with my pollen substitute, so it's not complete junk food for the...

    Re: Stop feeding pollen patties?

Try spiking your syrup with pure anise extract. It smells like liquorice and the bees go crazy for it. Then make your pollen patties with the anise-spiked syrup. It's amazing.
