Re: Made it through the winter.....hopefully

I did not pull any frames so was unable to see if there was brood, however their population seems larger than it was in the winter.....but I could be misjudging that.

I noticed some mold on the inside of the outer cover yesterday, what should I do?

Re: Made it through the winter.....hopefully

We had a warm day (50’s) followed by cold again, on the warm day I check the hive and they were flying....tons of action and quite noisy. Is it safe to assume that they have survived the winter?

    Made it through the winter.....hopefully

I have some questions on what to do now that spring is coming. This is my first hive and their first winter, last I checked around mid February there was still movement inside. I didn't open the...

    Tips on winterizing

My first winter, was wondering if anyone had some tips on winterizing for upstate New York, 2 deep 10 frame hive. Best methods?

Best kind of insulation for outside? Change out screen bottoms...

    Re: Smell outside of hive

No slim last inspection, I've noticed the smell for months just seems stronger now.

    How is the goldenrod honey?

    Smell outside of hive

I notice an odd smell outside of the hive, I suppose it could be described as yeasty. I have read this could be the fermentation of honey due to SHB larvae.

I do have a small amount of beetles...

    Re: Not building comb... Why?

I don't have an excluder on, was going to wait until there was some comb drawn out for that.

Thanks for your advice...like you say for now I'll just feed a little and see what they do!

    Re: Not building comb... Why?

I was of course interested to see if my colony would produce honey for consumption this year, but since it is a first year hive I had not real expectations. I certainly don't want to consume honey...

    Re: Not building comb... Why?

I added some sugar water, although I don't like this practice....I'll watch so see how fast they consume it.

    Not building comb... Why?

I added a super a little over a week ago and inspected today thinking I'd see more progress than this. In the past they seem to have drawn out comb much faster. What is going on here? Are they...

    Cut comb foundation

I used cut comb as foundation for my first super, now I'm noticing that it's starting to flex in the hive. What would be the best way to stabilize it?

    Wedge top frame question

Can I use a wedge top frame as if it were a grooved with plastic foundation? Then next year pop the wedge (and foundation) out to use the wedge for foundation less?

    When to add super?

I was wondering when I should add a super? I put a second hive body (10 frame) on July 3rd. They since have drawn about about 60% of that, lots of eggs larvae and nectar.

    Do you think it's a...

Re: Plexiglass Top & Bee Behavior

Ohhh yeah, I put a relatively big ventilation hole in it. But the purpose is not to view but to let light in to get rid of the small hive beetles. I read somewhere to do that, but I guess you're...

    Plexiglass Top & Bee Behavior

I put a plexiglass top on the hive in an effort to encourage The SHB to move out. My thinking was to layer things they don't like to move them down and out. Plexi top for light, wintergreen soaked...

I would be interested in purchasing a nuc when the time comes.

    Bearding

This would be considered bearding, right? They aren't moving much, like in wash boarding and it's hot out today.

I got the nuc in the same area, about 20 minutes away. I believe it maybe have been a swarm he trapped. I'm pretty sure it's not an ant larvae....it had the three pairs of feet behind the head...

    Re: Odd looking comb

    Thank you for the response.

I found hive beetles and think the majority of their eggs are within this frame, the main reason I want it out of the hive all together. I think in this case I'm just...
  25. Re: Very small white worms/larvae on bottom board

Just as an update... Today I went into the hive to add a new hive body because it was getting really crowded. Saw only 1 beetle in the hive, and 1 on the cinder block it was sitting on...didn't see...
