    Re: Robbers on new Nucs

No they won't go away until they have destroyed them. But I don't know what you can do. Why do you need top ventilation this time of the year? I would move them if they were mine to some where there...
  2. Re: package bees, lots of drawn comb and capped honey

Too many options there. They don't need a lot of room to keep warm that early in the spring but you can use any of what you have and make a follower board to reduce the space and move the follower...

    Re: Pollen Patties Question

I would think putting pollen patties on in July in SHB country could be disastrous to a colony.

    Re: Swarming???

As has already been said if honey is one of your goals a big strong hive is necessary for that. When that big strong hive swarms there goes the chance to harvest much honey from that hive.

Re: Deer? Vandals? We shall see.

I doubt it was a deer. I have hives where deer are thick and never had a problem with them. But had a car last Friday night drive to the back of my hay field and knock over a hive stand with three...

    Re: Foundation less Lang questions

It is not a good idea to mix, if you are talking about alternating drawn comb with foundationless in the supers. They will most times draw the ones they are working really wide and ignore the rest....

Re: Just don't know what to buy

One little thing to consider. If you start with mediums either eight or ten frame and decide to change to deeps for brood later you can use the mediums for honey supers. If you start with deeps and...

Sticky: Re: squarepeg 2015 treatment free experience

We fish some little club tourneys out of Goose Pond and stay in Scottsboro when we do. Beautiful country around the river there. Stevenson is where I was talking about. Do you ever eat at the Mudd Cr...

Sticky: Re: squarepeg 2015 treatment free experience

Nice pictures. Where abouts are you on the Tn River we fish up and down the river but I can't think of the number of the highway bridge where we put the boat in. It's below the steam plant.
  11. Re: Do the Descendants of the Package Queen Produce Successively More Irritable Hives

David, I agree that $20 is a bargain for a queen and you are lucky to live close to Mike Haney so you can buy queens for that. Most queens from other locals are $25 - $35 around Nashville which makes...

Re: Suggest A Different Beginners Book.

I would almost bet that you cannot find a book that offers a balanced approach to small cell vs large cell. Delaplane supposedly did a study on small cell with the conclusion that SC was...

    Re: Community Feeders

If you are going to open feed it is best to put the feeders farther away from the hives. 50 yds or so. You can also open feed dry pollen if you want. But of course you will be feeding the community...

Re: 8 Frame deeps for brood boxes

Your choice of eight frame deeps is a good choice for the Nashville area. I live just a few miles east of Nashville and I have some colonies in eight frame deeps both in single eights and one double...
  19. Re: Five frame medium nucs. Best way to expand after purchase

You can do it either way. If they are really strong go ahead and put them in an eight frame box which will save a step of adding a five frame medium then transferring later.
    Putting another five...
  20. Re: Would it work to sell a full medium as a nuc/starter hive?

Thanks David for sharing info. A very good operational plan for our area. I buy queens from Mike Haney also. I wish I could get them that early.
  21. Re: Would it work to sell a full medium as a nuc/starter hive?

David, are you raising queens in the spring to put into the nucs or are they over wintered queens? Or southern queens? If you are raising spring queens when do you start raising the queens? And how...

People move hives from the deep south and the east coast to the almonds and back every year. Why is moving four hives any big deal. Screen em up and take off.

    Re: Why foundationless? Newbie questions

Thanks for reply. So many beekeepers complain about the drones drag on a colony is why I ask. Sounds like a good way to deal with the need for drones.

Re: Entrance reducer laying on the ground

I'll agree with the four legged rascals. A mouse will pull it out if it is not nailed down. And I had a ground squirrel get into one of my hives during the early Jan. cold spell while the bees were...
