  1. Re: Front Range Snow & extended Swarm Advisory

We got 2" of the white stuff and it is still dumping down rain. Got all of my Spring inspections done over the last 10 days & unwrapped and uninsulated. The Q's are laying up good but no Q-cells...
  2. Re: Best way to move a capped queen cell into a queenless colony?

    dude,

I'd say do another look-a-bout because the newly hatched Q may be hard to spot.

I don't have any QC's yet, but I am keeping the girls busy with lots of foundation to draw out.

  3. Re: Do you put weight on your top covers?

Retired one gallon paint cans full of sand and with lid. Free and come with handles. 30 MPH not uncommon in the Front Range foothills.

  4. Re: How much moisture is added to the hive, from respiration, over the winter?

    Kofu et.al.,

    I'm cool with the communications.

In your hypothetical bee tree or gum, yes, I think that a QB would be very similar, except that more moisture would be retained inside (the gum),...
  5. Re: How much moisture is added to the hive, from respiration, over the winter?

    enjambres & Kofu,

I would like to join in as a fellow collaborator on this QB discussion too. CO is low humidity year round. I have been running QBs for the past 5-6 years and tweaking them a bit...
  6. Re: Bee warmth through different foundations

I remember when I first joined BeeSource reading a thread about making a hole about the diameter of a nickel in the very middle of all of the frames for horizontal traffic or communication. Although...

    Re: Touched bear fence

    Lake trout,

Two suggestions: snow blow a swath outside around your fence and shovel snow out from underneath the "hot" cattle panels, and second, lay down a 2=3 foot wide roll of chicken wire on...

Re: Plans for a 3 frame nuc

    drlonzo,

    Excellent help for Buzzy!

    Justin,

If you cut four end panels out of "1 inch" solid wood (with frame rests) that are 7 1/2 inch wide and four side panels that are 9 7/8" long out of...

    Re: Front Range weather roller-coaster

    jwdeeming, et al,

I have a summer out yard in the mountains at 10 K ft. near Salida and I travel an hour on dirt from Hartsel down through South Park. As you have suggested, I put them out in the...

Re: Is this frame ok to reuse?

    Pathfinder,

The two take aways I get from the photo are: the bees died head first in the cells, frequently attributed to starvation; and, the presence of mold indicates too much moisture in the...
  14. Re: Bees attracted to hot tub and drowning by the hundreds :(

    Stephanie,

I have seen this topic discussed previously on beesource but my searches turned up nothing. I would agree with many of the suggestions already offered. Several additional things are: ...
  15. Re: Why I have never lost an over-wintered hive

I'm pretty much on agreement with C10250, Post 1 and Enjambres , Post 11 with a few +/- exceptions. And although winter isn't over yet at today's inspection/feeding I have a 9% loss. Exceptions...

    Re: Front Range weather roller-coaster

There is another side to the snow story too: not all snow equals beneficial water. Colorado is very arid and most of the snow sublimates or goes directly from a solid (the snow) into a gas (water...

  21. Re: Monitoring the hive temp. What are my bee's up to?

    dingbat,

I am replicating the hive temperature gathering and plotting that shinbone has done over the past couple of years but from a very primitive approach compared to what you are doing. I...
  22. FYI: Had a Neighbor Visit the Bee Yard Last Night

He skirted around the outside of the bee yard bear fence. At a walk his hind foot goes in his front foot print.

(Sorry, unable to upload foot prints in the snow)

    A two legged neighbor took...

Re: What lubricant in extractor tub

From personal experience, if the extractor is motorized (ie. high RPM) I would suggest the food safe lubricant, and refresh it periodically. If it is hand crank, the bees wax would probably work OK....
