Re: 1:1 or 1:2 Sugar water for new package?

One thing that is often overlooked is 1:1 also helps to increase the humidity levels in the hive which in turn stimulates brood rearing. This is particularly important here on the prairies where we...

Re: Comb from cutout, harvesting the wax

You can also make a solar wax melter, I filtered old brood comb from a cutout through paper towel in mine. I only did it once and it came out pure enough for lip balm. Also keep the scum gum that's...

Re: Was it a swarm of SHB?

Jamie Ellis gave a talk at the 2014 National Honey Show. Although we don't have SHB here I found it interesting and there is one part where he explains about different kinds of Scarab beetles....

Re: is this normal behavior. .

Of course, I do the same thing myself except I use a medium box over my feeder. The video confused me a bit. The girls really do look good though.

The bees look happy happy to me, but I don't understand why you need 2 boxes for packages installed 4 days ago?

Re: Converting a top bar hive to a langstoth

I have just tacked a 19" strip to the top bar only and I also have added end bars and a bottom bar onto the 17" top bar so that it makes a frame.

  15. Re: Converting some hives back to deeps from mediums

In my location when I increase the brood boxes for my packages I always put the new box underneath, because it helps to retain heat for the brood. If you put it above it leaves a big space for the...

I would suspect a Trojan. I had the same thing happen with explorer years back. No pop up blocker would work and it was impossible to even use the browser.
  19. Re: How long do you leave a swarm trap in the same location?

I was assuming that you were putting out multiple traps, it sounds like you are only using one. Everybody says it's like fishing you put a line in the water and see what you catch. So the more...
  20. Re: How long do you leave a swarm trap in the same location?

I agree with odfrank. Leave them for the season, I set mine out end of May until the middle of September here in Southern Alberta. I have caught swarms from July to September.

    Re: Mass Bee suicide?

You've described the symptoms of HMF poisoning. Did you boil your sugar syrup or HFCS or add some acid to change the ph?
