    Re: 4 frame nucs

Why not just build a more standard 5 frame nuc? :)

    Repairing holes in veil?

I just noticed today I have a bunch of little holes in my veil ... i don't really know exactly how they got there, but it's a new suit this year. I have run it through the washing machine a few...

    Are we in a dearth?

For those folks from the vancouver (BC) area ... are we currently in a bit of a dearth right now? I've noticed comb building slow down considerably now since the blackberries are done and there's...

    Re: Lets talk Burlap

    I wouldn't advise using cardboard.

I know a lot of people use it, it's quick, simple, easy to light ... but the corrugated innards are stuck together with a nasty synthetic glue that off-gasses...
  6. Re: papers provide conclusive evidence that the pesticides are causing the mass death

I don't think anyone can possibly deny that made-made pesticides, insecticides and any other synthetic chemical used en masse would NOT have some negative impact on the environment, including...

Re: Leaving honey stores for the winter...

What do you mean by leave honey on the hive though? That's my question ... do you typically just leave honey already stored in the brood chamber (like in the bottom 2 deeps or bottom 3 mediums) and...

Leaving honey stores for the winter...

I understand it's necessary (or prudent perhaps) to leave somewhere between 50-100 pounds of honey for a hive in order for them to overwinter.

My question is - for beeks that DO leave honey...

    Equalize Hives?

I have 2 hives (new this year from spring packages). One hive is booming and I just added the 4th medium box today (running all mediums). The other hive is progressing, but not as quickly. It...
  10. Re: What IPhone App are you using for your hive?

I'm using Beetight as well ... it's ok, does the job for the most part.

    Re: Pacific Northwest Beekeeping

I'm in Ladner (South Delta) and started a couple hives this year as well (after extensive research!). You're probably in the exact same place I was a year ago ... leaning heavily towards it but...

I'd also love to hear from others as to whether (or how well!) the battery remedy works!

Re: Should I move my Hives

It largely depends on your location as well. My hives are in the shade most of the day and are building up just fine. The only benefit of full sun is it can keep certain pests at bay, but I don't...

    Re: Day 2 Sting Swelling

Yes, itching is a very normal reaction - I would suggest it's more abnormal to NOT get the itch as a result (count yourself lucky). Apparently both the itching as well as swelling can subside (and...

    Re: Day 2 Sting Swelling

Yeah the itching was driving me mental last night @ 2:30 AM. I ended up getting up, icing it for 5 minutes and (in desperation) spreading some toothpaste on the area. To my surprise, it actually...

    Day 2 Sting Swelling

I know this has been covered to some degree here and there with other posts, but not specifically around swelling that occurs on day 2 after a bee sting.

    8 frame Medium Nucs?

Does anyone use 8 frame medium boxes as nucs? If so, do you actually use all 8 frames? I've heard they're the same volume as 5 frame deeps, and I run all mediums so it seemed like a good way to go.

Re: Why so eager to swarm?

Good question. You might want to try opening the brood nest ... i.e. taking a few honey/etc frames out of the brood chambers and replacing them with empty frames.

Thanks y'all. Would anyone recommend removing that funky drone comb/cells on my next inspection?
