    Queen piping

About two and a half weeks ago I split a hive, taking the queen and frames to another yard.

Today I was back at the original hive; I had planned to look for a new queen. After opening the hive I...

    Re: Using plywood for boxes

Yeah, that's a good idea. I have 4 medium "bottomless" boxes that I made, then changed my mind and decided to use only deep frames. I will be building 3 inch frames to allow stacking the mediums on...
  3. Re: Notches and holes... Does it really matter?

My bees tend to mostly ignore the upper entrance that I provide with my inner cover. This is even the case when I re-hived a split, providing a lower 1-bee wide entrance and a 4 or 5-bee wide upper...

    Re: Hive beetle problem

Most of the participants in this discussion are in southern states. Three years ago SHB were quite numerous here in MD, but the past 2 years I have seen a few in a couple of my hives, but in very...
  5. Re: over winter question about milar film

Mylar does not "breathe". I'm not too keen on using a material that is essentially air-tight.

    Re: Split gone bad

+1! You need to wait another week to 10 days (or more) to look for new brood.

    sumac being worked in Maryland

I stopped to look at some sumac in bloom. The flowers are small yellowish green, and had many honeybees as well as bumblebees working.

I would like to collect some of the seed pods in the fall,...

    Re: THickness for pants

+1. I don't remember ever getting stung THROUGH the pants. I probably have taken 2 or 3 dozen stings in 4 years, and only one on the leg, when a bee crawled up my pant leg.

    Re: Queen marking

OIL-BASED SHARPIE. Got it at Jo Anne fabrics.

Before marking the queen, make sure the pen is running well. I try it out on a piece of cardboard just before marking the queen.

    Re: overheating

You may be able to get them to move inside spritsing them with a spray bottle (plain water) set on mist. The mist will cool the area around them and might get them to move inside.
  12. Re: Should I try a fourth Week of New Brood for the Laying Worker Hive

    Throwing good money after bad.

I would move the box(es) at least 100 feet away, place a different box with frames where the original hive had been, and shake the bees out. Foragers will return...

    Re: Laying worker in trap-out?

Four frames of capped brood! If that were in my yard I would let 'em be. Last summer I had a laying worker situation in a four-box colony, and there was no capped worker brood.

Re: Less small hive beetles this year?

Sorry I didn't see your post MATT; I posted a similar thread this afternoon.

Similar to last year I have seen a few here and there, but nothing like several years ago when I was slimed. ...

Re: Removing bees from honey supers

I wanted only a small number of frames to extract, so I first placed an empty deep box with a cover about 30 feet from where I pulled frames. One by one I pulled the frame, shook off then brushed...
  16. Re: Just added new honey super w/no comb should I feed sugar water?

What are you doing with the "honey". If your purpose is to allow the bees to draw comb and store for the winter I would remove queen excluders and allow them to store and the queen to lay where she...

Re: Problem I have never seen before

    +1 enjambres' reply.

I used to be a bit squeemish about fixing a cross-comb mess. It's best to just get in and get it fixed.

Besides a knife you should have your smoker lit and working so...
  18. Re: Bees and Wasps cooperating on a hive attack

I would definitely take out the wasp nest. I would then monitor whether there is fighting (robbing) after the wasps are taken out. I would make the entrance smaller and add robber screens after...
  19. Small Hive Beetles situation in your area

Again this year I have not seen many SHB in my hives. We did have another brutally cold winter just like last winter, so maybe that is the reason.

I'm curious as to what other BEEKS are seeing...

    Re: Queen not layig

I did feed this colony with a little honey & some honey/megabee mix about 10 days before I saw capped brood.

Re: 5 frame versus 8 frame hive.

To me it depends on the situation. Sometimes the situation of the colony I am splitting from makes a 5-frame nuc a better choice, other times, a larger hive. If the "from" hive has many frames of...

@Vance: You may be half wrong. I went into that hive today and saw brood...some capped. I did not see the queen so I couldn't tell if she looked ashamed. :)

    Re: foundationless frames wedge topbar

@daweez04: Whose frames are these? Dadant, Mann Lake, or other??? I have Mann Lake. When I try to turn the wedge 90 degrees, it usually breaks loose, so I glue it in place.

    Re: foundationless frames wedge topbar

This spring I purchased 100 Mann Lake wedge top frames. I pop the frame loose and glue it in place. I have about 40-50 done this way, and the bees are drawing on it (not now, we are in a dearth).
  25. Re: How does one selectively "exterminate" mean guard bees with soapy water?

I understand you are in the process of requeening using cells from a gentler colony. I think it will just take time for the nasties to die off.
