  1. Re: Kirk Webster January 2016: FERAL AND MANAGED COLONIES

I have to question this SP. I made 27T of honey in 2015, and fed very little. Certainly didn't take all their honey and feed back syrup. In fact, the vast number of colonies got fed zero. I have...
  2. Re: How do you keep nuc clusters from freezing overwinter?

    I haven't Steve.
  3. Re: How do you keep nuc clusters from freezing overwinter?

Basically, I agree with you. 5x5 is a 10 frame single in a vertical configuration. Both setups will winter bees successfully. The difference is in our locations. You're in TN. I'm on the Canada...
  4. Re: Kirk Webster January 2016: FERAL AND MANAGED COLONIES

Maybe not totally. This one is very much alive and living in Portadown, Northern Ireland. At least she was last February.

  5. Re: VT Gets a New Part Time State Beekeeper

One would hope he has enough experience to find an early infection. Who knows if he does.

Well, if the nuc seller is using antibiotics to control AFB, and the buyer doesn't use or even know about...
  6. Re: VT Gets a New Part Time State Beekeeper

    Where to start....

Our inspection program has gone the way of many other state inspection programs. Although it's not gone, the scope has been greatly reduced. In the 1980s, Vermont had a chief...

    Just write him an email....
  8. Re: do ten frame boxes increase starvation?

How do you insure that your colonies are heavy "Enough" in the Fall....And what is your hive configuration going into winter?

I have kept bees in 10 frame equipment along the Canada border, for...

    AMF?
  11. Re: Michael Palmer mini mating nuc division board feeder

    I like cans better.
  12. Re: Michael Palmer mini mating nuc division board feeder

For the mating nucs I still use bags. I do my winter feeding after the last queens are caught and the 4-way nucs (4 frame) are made 2-way (8 combs). A bag is placed on the nucs with 2 holes for...

Re: Honey left over from winter?

When you reverse the brood chamber, place the medium with honey on the bottom board. The bees will move the honey up and the super will be emptied. Quicker of you scratch the cappings.

    I just...
  14. Re: My bees are rising from the dead as we speak

    Are they starving?
  15. Re: How many dead-outs are the result of the 2 types of nosema?

    >>Do you regularly renew hives by cleaning and applying fresh paint?

    No

    >>Remove old brood combs and replace with fresh foundation?

Regularly? No. I have some combs that are decades old....

    Re: Poster Child

I don't know about fungicides on corn, but Jim Frasier at Penn State did a study on fungicides in apple pollen. He found that when bees were fed apple pollen with fungicide....I believe it was...

Re: Types of hive stands - ideas

I don't like my hives high off the ground.

Cut a P.T. 2x4x10' into...2-4' pieces and 2-1' pieces. Nail the 1' pieces between the 4' pieces, 1' from the ends. Holds 2 hives.
  19. Re: How many dead-outs are the result of the 2 types of nosema?

    Not at all.
  20. Re: Michael Palmer mini mating nuc division board feeder

I made follower boards from 3/4" pine that fill the space and are movable. Nice not having to deal with the feeders....feeders are okay, and they fill the bill. But, queens enter the feeder and you...
  21. Re: Michael Palmer mini mating nuc division board feeder

The feeder has a pine rim and tempered masonite covers. Use subfloor adhesive to seal all joints in rim and for sealing covers to rim.

You can use luan but it gets ripped up pretty badly after...

One lied to me, also. He was selling nucleus colonies all over New...
  23. Re: How many dead-outs are the result of the 2 types of nosema?

    Nothing?

When N. apis was the strain infecting our bees, they told us to treat when spore count rose to 1 million spores per bee. Over the years I saw colonies that I thought might have winter...
  24. Re: Michael Palmer mini mating nuc division board feeder

I'll try to find a photo and describe how to make one. Photobucket is down right now.
