Re: What is the per hive value?

I understand that we are taking apples and oranges, but I have bought and sold (for my day job) insurance agencies. We value them somewhere in the ballpark between 1-2 times annual gross income. ...

    Queens still laying in CT

With temperatures approaching 60 today, I pulled some frames to see what we had for stores at this early part of winter. Several hives had hand size patches of brood on 2-3 frames. Eggs as well, I...

    Re: Nuc prices for 2016

I feel that as a community off nuc sellers, which I am looking to get back into, we owe it to each other to continue to push prices as high as people are willing to pay. That is what the package...

Poll: Re: Do you Build or Buy your Hive Bodies?

I am new to woodworking, and can do enough to get by, but I am wondering why a router would not work, or is not recommended when making the rabbits and frame rests. Thanks,

I am interested in seeing some pics if you have them. I am starting this weekend making the 4 frame deep supers too. Thanks,

  8. Re: Statistics of new and total beekeepers, estimates of nuc and queen sales

[QUOTE=Oldtimer;1352885]....There is a catch 22 with this. A big drawcard will be if you can supply treatment free bees. But this is also the downside. If you go treatment free you may also lose bees...

Re: Nuc Box Dimensions for the top deep

Thanks everyone, admittedly I am not great with woodworking, but I can usually get by. In the past I have built supers, 5 frame nucs, and hive covers. If it gets to be too time consuming I may end...

Re: Nuc Box Dimensions for the top deep

ok, so just for confirmation the 4 frame deep supers dimensions are 9.5" X 7 3/8" X 19 7/8" and the bottom divided deep has a divider 1.5" thick, everything used is assuming 3/4" wood. Thanks,

    Re: Treatment free claims?

In my area there are maybe a half dozen beekeepers or so. Some of which purchase packages. I am thinking about giving them some of my daughter queens for free. My hope is that they will requeen...

Mike-Do you find you need to treat your nucs or does harvesting frames of brood for increase keep the mite populations low enough for you?

  15. Re: Statistics of new and total beekeepers, estimates of nuc and queen sales

Yes flexibility is important, both in business and more importantly when looking for a prom date. But a basic business plan has seven different sections, one of which is "Market Research" which is...
  16. Re: Statistics of new and total beekeepers, estimates of nuc and queen sales

Thank you Grant, that is a great post, actually a bit inspirational. I agree and have seen local overwintered nucleus colonies going for about $190 and early summer made nucs for $160. Listening...
  17. Re: Statistics of new and total beekeepers, estimates of nuc and queen sales

That is a great idea just going to the state apiculturalists. I will also reach out to Shane. I believe my production capabilities will only be limited by my ability/speed to buy or build...

I am not trying to be secretive at all, it was not my intention to come off that way. I am looking to produce queens and nucs primarily to the northeast market. For the market research section of...

  22. Re: Can i use OAV with screened bottom board?

Yes you can use it, I have. You will need to put in the inspection board underneath or some other way of closing the screen, it doesn't necessarily have to be 100% sealed shut but the more the...
