Re: Learned a few things really fast

Being an electrician I always have some big spools laying around. When I got my first hive that's what I used. I soon found that I wasn't tall enough to work it 3 boxes high.
    There still really...
  2. Re: Is leaving dead outs in the bee yard a possible swarm catcher?

One time I set a deadout on top of the inner cover so they could rob it out. The notch was facing up.
Checked a few days later to see if it was empty and a swarm had moved in.

    Re: Split advice

I always figure 30 days. I often have very young larva at this time but nearly always eggs. Once it was 34 days. So roughly May 10

You can add a frame of brood if you want but once the cell is...

    Re: Combining Queen-right Nucs

As has been said you can sell one queen. Or you can combine. I don't use newspaper very often, I just set them together. The bees will decide which queen they keep. They may keep both for awhile.

  5. Re: When making nucs with queen cells, how long to feed?

Depending on how much emerging brood you put in the nucs. This will be the first work force. Until the queen starts laying the bees don't seem to have a purpose. Their always busy but not much gets...
  6. Re: Buckfast? Italian? Carni? All Mutts..........???

Understand this is something I know little about. My opinion is that unless your on an island several miles from any other land then you can't be sure what drones your queens mother mated with. I'm...

Re: Ever have a hive turn aggressive.....

Some days mine are as sweet as could be. Most days as a matter of fact. Other days I threaten to throw gas on them and set them on fire. I won't of course.
    They are female you know!:)

    Re: New Genetics?

I've often wondered the same thing. There are two bee trees close to me that I know of. There are no other beekeepers around me that I know of. One hive at the neighbors is the only surviver of my...

    Re: Split Questions

I do just like tenbears but as has already been said a queen born in Aug is not prone to swarm this year.
As long as she has room to lay she should be alright.

If your going to raise a queen in a...

Re: Queen in box, no eggs, queen cells

    What everybody else said.
Once in swarm mode the only sure way to stop it is to pull the old queen and a couple frames of brood and only leave behind 2 cells at the most.

    Unless you saw her late...

    Re: Hive body reversals?

I don't reverse at all. By the time spring buildup is in full swing I'll have brood from top to bottom.

They set their broodnest up the way they want it. I figure they know more about such matters...
  13. Re: Bees focussed on eating honey in top medium super

Their probably not eating all that honey. Their rearranging it to set up the broodnest. In the spring mine want two deeps for the brood. At the end of winter it's not uncommon to have all the brood...

    Re: Wild Bee Issue

Years ago I had a hornets nest in the front yard. They weren't too bad at first but eventually got aggressive.
I tied some oily rags on a long pole and after dark burnt them down.

Re: Confining bees in a new nuc??

I do like deepsouth except I add a frame of emerging brood. I let any flying bees go home. The bees that are born there in the next few days consider it home.

Re: Drones and drone brood - NY Upstate puzzle

My drone layers would never supersede when I gave them a frame of eggs. I've always had to kill her first.
Another caution that I've had trouble with. Once bees reach a certain age they won't try to...

    Re: Not happy with me

Sometimes I can weed eat around mine with no problems. Sometimes I might make it to the last hive before getting stung. sometimes their waiting for me to get there.

Any more I just suit up anyway.

    Re: Pick-up pushed back!

I believe the week prior to swarm season will not be on a calendar. It will be according to flow. It seems to me that I usually have a flow a couple weeks before blackberries. I'll keep the broodnest...

Re: Drones and drone brood - NY Upstate puzzle

I guess some bees will leave a drone egg in a worker cell and just build it out bigger. My bees didn't do this. If an egg was placed in a drone cell it was allowed to stay. If they were in worker...

    Re: Pick-up pushed back!

I won't start raising queens here until the blackberries bloom. Could be first or last week of may.
Mother nature had to pound on my head pretty hard before I learned this lesson.

Re: Drones and drone brood - NY Upstate puzzle

    I'm with Acebird. I'm not sure there's a problem.

IMO dark bees tend to go thru winter in a smaller cluster and start buildup slightly later.
Pro- they use less stores and I believe have a better...

  24. Re: Is there an alternative to buying a nuc box?

I've raised queens in the plastic cardboard nucs in the summer. Their cheap and they work.

Re: excepting capped queen cells ?

I've never done this either. Will they tear down theirs or will they swarm? I suspect the first queen born will kill all the rest.

If it was me I'd tear down all of the young ones once there were...
