Re: When can I move a swarm?

Thanks all. This is stuff I am familiar with, but I didn't have time to think!

I really don't know how big it is. I have seen swarms leave. I have seen them in trees, and boxed them up. I have had...

Re: When can I move a swarm?

OK, maybe I should have put those 2 questions seperately. My main concern is to get them int brood boxes so they don't start laying in the supers.

When can I move a swarm?

I had a good size swarm move into a stack of supers yesterday. How long should I wait before getting them into brood boxes and moving them to the yard to avoid them leaving?
  4. Re: Expanding Apiary without compromising the Dog’s Safety.

My dog also snaps at flies but has learned not to do so with bees. He also doesn't go in front of the hives.

I expect the use of the word "swarm" to be used correctly in this forum.

    I...

    Re: Honey tastes "smokey"

Bingo. I now use very little, if any smoke when removing supers.

Re: Should I be feeding my bees now? (syrup)

I can't believe that anyone would think that it is all right to feed bees in summer for anything other than an extreme situation. What am I missing?

    Re: Totally baffled!

Grains of rice would be quite a bit larger than eggs. Why do you say the hive "seemed" dead?

    Re: Brand new Beekeeper

That brings back memories. I was installing my first nuc in the midst of a gazillion bees and I just thought "unworldly" at one point I just stood up and backed away for a minute to gather myself.

    I'm thinking of trying these.

  11. Re: Can you split a new package with an extra queen?

Interesting thread. Lots of "opinions," some seem to be based on what someone else told them. Subscribing to a notion comes before forming an opinion.

Seems like the 3 pound package is all the...

    Re: Split Questions

    My first thought re: size.

This is a very young queen and probably won't swarm unless she has to. By that I mean no room. Very easy to to get a split from this since it is , as you say, a strong...

    Re: Advice desperately needed

You are probably correct that your hives are attracting swarms. If you can try to keep your hives out of sight you can most likely keep more than 8 hives. Out of sight can be hidden in plain sight....

    Re: Quick split question

I would listen to the people whose judgement I trust.

If I had no one to ask, my first inclination would be to split the brood frames 50/50. Get all the bees off of half of them, shake or brush....

    Re: Would you requeen?

Huge assumption to think that a new queen would turn the tide. May make it worse.

I have been rereading Richard Taylor, he spoke of beekeepers if not sure of what to do should do nothing.

    Have...

    Re: Screws or Nails?

Nails are plenty, glue is overkill, screws are way over the top. And, No, I don't have empirical knowledge of this. But, I do know a hawk from a handsaw.

Re: Western Bee Supply - outrageous shipping costs!

Just checked a couple random items from Mann and from Amazon. Pretty close. MOST things using prime has shipping factored in. Making it the same bottom line as non-prime sales from Amazon.

    Re: Painting boxes

If you must paint, paint only what is exposed to the elements. The bees will take care of the rest.
  23. Re: Today i inspected my 2 hives and i need your thoughts on what i seeen

As long as the bees from the "other" hive bring in pollen or nectar it shouldn't be a problem.
  24. Re: Aggression with strongest hives, and inspection report.

I was looking at these gloves.

    Re: Splitting new Nucs

Thank you. The comment of "critical mass" seemed to bring a few things together for me. I don't recall, but I am sure that you do, one of the famous authors, guessing Doolittle, said to take brood...
