Re: how to tell africanized bee swarm?

I'm doing my best to encourage her to find another home for it - hopefully way out of the city. Your comment about liability makes a lot of sense.
We've got plenty of honey and wax we can give her...

Re: how to tell africanized bee swarm?

She said they calmed down quick. I just don't like her hiving them in her small city back yard. She got them in the middle of Tucson.

Re: how to tell africanized bee swarm?

Oh great. I wish I could convince her NOT to collect swarms in Tucson. I just read that the majority are africanized. She started all this when she did a cut out of normal bees at her boyfriend's...

how to tell africanized bee swarm?

    Hi,
Since honeybees aren't usually very aggressive when in a swarm, is this also true for africanized bees while they are in a swarm? I know africanized bees are horribly aggressive when defending...
  5. Re: swarm caught in Tucson needs a home right now!

Thanks for the replies. The bees have found a home. She called some collectors that she found online but was panicking because it was getting quite late and had no response yet. But one did come...
  6. swarm caught in Tucson needs a home right now!

My daughter in Tucson caught a swarm in a 5 gallon bucket with a net on the top and she needs it gone ASAP. She's not a bee keeper. She got it out of a shed before the owners killed the bees as they...

Re: Show us your honey labels!

I'm not selling my honey, but I definitely have enough to trade or give away as presents so I made an amusing label for the top of the jar.

Re: The bees are out today

I don't think I've seen them out at 31 F but I have seen them out in the 40's on a sunny day, bee poop spots on the snow. My bees are mutts and come in many shades, but mostly dark. Some are...

    The bees are out today

Just a couple of weeks ago we had minus 10 F temperatures. It didn't get out of the thirties for at least a week. Lots of cold and then wind. Ugh. Today we are in the upper sixties and I have...

Re: Is Roundup as safe as we have been told?

I've been using a grass killer for years. It'll hurt some things but leaves most dicots alone.

    Re: Huge wasp attacking bees

I use yellow jacket traps with meat in them. The meat attracts the yellow jackets, which are my biggest problem, and they also attract the large predatory wasps. It doesn't attract bees nor does it...

Re: What Kind of Bee is this?

I'm fairly certain that's a leaf cutter bee. I get quite a few of them up here.

  13. Re: Denver area beeks - how does your honey production look for 2014?

I got two medium supers mostly full on one hive and one super full on another. The other three hives are new this year, but they filled two deeps each so are good for the winter.

    The honey...

Re: Denver area honey color in 2014

Thanks so much for the replies from Colorado!

I was cleaning the last bit of the honey from the buckets with my finger and found it really had a good lasting honey taste. :)

Re: Denver area honey color in 2014

Yes, we had huge fields of it nearby. I only ever see this when we get good summer rains and the last time I saw good summer rains and lots of yellow clover was years before I had bees.

Re: Denver area honey color in 2014

I thought about that since it is the same color as sugar honey, but my spouse says it's doesn't taste like sugar honey. We fed the bees a lot during our first year and took some of that honey off....

Denver area honey color in 2014

I just got done bottling up this years honey from my hives and it's the lightest colored honey I've ever seen. Some years it's very dark.
I'd heard from one other beekeeper that he was seeing light...

I've seen honeybees try to pollinate squash, but they were chased off by the native squash bees. My squash and other cucurbit flowers are often full of these bees.
