    Re: Robbers!

I did that last week, hoping for the best. The robbers disappeared for awhile then apparently snuck back in. The weather's been coolish and overcast here so there's not been much visible bee...

    Re: Robbers!

No robber screen, but I will invest or make one next year for sure!

Also, it's my only surviving hive (out of three) so there's no spare brood.

This is my first year and it's been rather...

    Robbers!

    They're back.

The hive has had a one-bee-sized entrance for weeks now to keep them at bay, but it looks like the hive is too weak to keep them fended off.

Is it possible to fix this?...

    Re: Eating comb honey?

I remember chewing comb for the honey as a kid. Expecting to do that as an adult, too! :)

This is my first year -- how many bars should be left for the bees?

Re: a few questions about top bar hives.

Scent rises in the day w/the heat and sinks at night in the coolness. Mice have pretty good sniffers so I would guess they can easily smell a hive from a distance let alone a few feet off the ground....

Re: Adding 'used' combs to a TBH

I did look for eggs, but probably not close enough (still learning what to look for). I could tell, however, that there was not a good laying pattern by what was capped. That plus the lack of brood...

Re: Adding 'used' combs to a TBH

Finally got the five largest combs of the ten tied onto bars this morning. Wondering if I should move the old, empty combs closer to the entrance as 2 of the 3 former brood combs are being filled...

Re: Adding 'used' combs to a TBH

That's good to know. I'll get the combs tied in tonight, thanks for the tip on spraying, too. Anything to give them a wing up for winter -- thanks!!

Re: Adding 'used' combs to a TBH

In a laying worker hive you'll see random brood cells rather than a good laying pattern. The bees will also be louder and more aggressive -- at least mine were and I understand that is a normal if a...

Adding 'used' combs to a TBH

Hi all. I had this posted in one of the other forums before I realized there was a TBH forum. Maybe someone here has an answer!

My two, first-year hives failed this summer -- turned into laying...

Adding 'used' combs to a TBH

My two hives failed this summer, but I saved the combs from them (which were pretty empty due to robbers).

I removed a 3-comb hive for a homeowner a few weeks ago, attached the combs to bars and...
