Re: Do you check before you place your hives

    Re: city water and syrup

CityAcres, you must realize some of us don't get much honey and bees will need some feeding time to time in certain arid or overly cultivated land with nothing to forage on certain times of the year.

Re: How to make sugar syurp

I use a hot plate with a stir bar, measure by weight, let it come to slight boil let it cool. I use pyrex 1 liter or 2 liter jars, screw the cap on tight right after pulling off the heat and it'll...

Re: excepting capped queen cells ?

They will usually tear down cells once a queen emerges, so if you come back in a week, don't be surprised all the new cells are gone.

Re: Odds that this swarm is mine?

Typically you want to leave 2-3 but it's always a gamble. I'm not sure how it pans out that secondary and tertiary swarms are cast. Some hives will swarm themselves to nothing...

Re: External signs walkway split is working

When did you make the splits? I will check for queencells in a week, then leave em alone after that.

Re: Balling a newly marked queen

You mark any other queens in that tube prior? Sometimes they get balled after marking, it happens and it's one of the reasons I don't understand why people feel so compelled to mark their queens.

    Re: swarm catching

I never screen in a hive unless moving. Just dump the stragglers in, won't hurt anything at this point. Do they have comb? I just hived one, fed it yesterday, gonna check back in a couple weeks...

Before you jump to conclusions, small cell or foundationless hasn't really been proven to be effective for controlling varroa. Has it worked for some.... yes, has it worked for a lot of other...

Re: Swarm Trap, partial success, need advice

Are they right on the entrance? That could be the whole swarm just sitting on the box too or maybe the box wasn't big enough.

Re: Did I do this split right?

I would remove the queencells if you put a bought queen in there or she'll be gone when the first virgin hatches.
