    Re: Hello from Croatia

Welcome Kensai. I lived in Croatia for two years - what a beautiful country. Seems to be a perfect place for beekeeping.

    Re: Introducing virgin queens

I have worked with virgin queens last year with some good success. I did it on a small scale of about 10 splits. But before I introduced the virgins I actually marked them allowing me to know with...

Re: Calif on a heat wave

I was wondering the same thing - on the other hand there is basically nothing to eat out there and they waste a lot of energy flying around and keeping the big brood nest warm, especially at night...

    Re: Pollination Prices for 2014

A lot will depend on what the west side growers will do if they wont get any water allotment for 2014. I heard that there are about 70 000 acres of almonds on the west side of the valley which were...

Re: Q: Theorictical Honey per Acre

An acre will more likely keep 1-4 strong colonies busy - if in full bloom - not 20!

    Re: Stanislaus county area beekeeper

I live 15 min south of Turlock and even I have more almond trees than bee hives I might be able to help you get started in some ways - PM me for details!
  13. Re: Buying bees within flight distance - how?

I think you will be fine !
The loss of foragers is minor if you give them a queen cell - there will be plenty of foragers when there is new brood.
If you want to, you can also close the entrance...

Re: Q: All Mediums for Almonds...

I think you would be just fine with all mediums - as long as you have bees in them!

    Re: pollen patties for winter?

Jake, I am about an hour south of you and I am feeding patties since about the beginning of September. In our climate the bees still have a lot of brood and will have some for most of the winter. So...

    Re: Advice needed: dying hive

If you have 3 to 4 frames of bees and you can get a mated queen it is worth a try IMO - not much to loose and a lot to learn!
  18. Re: For Next Year: Alternating Deep/Medium Frames?

I have done it with shallows - works very well!

    Re: pollen substitute for winter?

I think feeding Pollen sub during fall and summer is a must in CA if your hive has not plenty of stores of it. My hives here in central CA keep a small brood area all winter long and brood heavy well...

Re: A new queen in my "queenless" hive

Yes, most probably you had a virgin queen in that swarm. Wait another week and check for new brood! I am not even 100% sure those are queen cells in those pictures - maybe Yes but maybe just drone...

Re: Bees dying by the millions in Canada

I don't think your comparison with the " car running into the house " makes any sense in this case! It should be more like this:

During an accident in town in which a horse, pedestrian, bike, car,...
