What is your favorite cell cup color and why? Before I jump into it I'd like to hear some thoughts and reasons.

    Wild Beehive Art

Why do you suppose that art sometimes depicts wild hives as something like a skep? Sometimes they look like a skep but often they look like hornets nest. My wife as just reading a childrens book to...

    Re: The Scourge of Varroa?

Forgive me for the late entrance, I'm still catching up
If this were the case then what was the point of the Primorsky Russians brought over? Why is it their natural resistance did not get trumped...

Re: switching to small cell . How do i do it?

Funky, because once I had them regressed and started adding foundationless between pf 120 they really calmed down on the burr/brace comb. They didn't completely stop it but the difference was...

Re: switching to small cell . How do i do it?

I was told that if that is all you give them, then that is what they will use. I did just that and they took right to it. Be warned however, I discovered that since all they had was small cell they...

    Re: Hive bodies shifting?

I still don't think it is anybody or a creature moving it because they are way too close to my house and I am rural enough that you just don't see people around the woods. It takes weeks/months for...

    Hive bodies shifting?

Do hive bodies walk or shift? I have a hive that the boxes are shifting on and can't figure it out. The hive consists of 4 medium supers, all 8 frame. Standing behind the hive, the bottom box...

Re: 10 frame vs 8 frame???

I made a thread some time back showing the math of medium vs deep along with 8 vs 10 frame. You can find it here.
I went all 8 frame medium and have absolutely no regret going all mediums, however...

Two of my hives were installed from identical packages on the same day. One of those hives uses the top entrance the majority of the time, the other barely uses it. My top entrance is Michael Bush...

    Re: Knowing size of cluster?

Good stuff! Thanks Michael, sqkcrk, and Jon B. I was just off base thinking that I couldn't open the top cover in the winter or else the rush of cold air would seriously disturb the hive.
    Thanks...

Bingo! That's exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for the patience.

    Thanks for the tip beedeetee.
So Jon_B how do you know that the cluster is 6-8 frames and 3/4 of one deep?
sqkcrk, how would I know if they only cover 3 frames?
I guess what I'm trying to ask is...

I hear people mention size of cluster over winter, and am curious how you go about knowing roughly how big a cluster is. Right before it started turning cold last winter I took my top cover off and...

Re: Royal Jelly consumption post emergence?

Yep. I'm very curious as to whether the queen preferred the royal jelly or the honey, and what effect feeding quite a bit of it would do to a queen. Neat experiment, can't wait to see your results.

    Hive body volume math

I see discussions about hive volume of deeps vs mediums (honey supers size) quite a bit so I thought Id crunch the numbers for people to see. This is all based off the Dadant style frame plans...

It would make for an interesting experiment if the queen was fed quite a bit of royal jelly after emerging. I'm not saying that royal jelly has magical properties but with the change it brings about...

I thought that royal jelly was only for larvae, but in this post Michael Bush (lucky you!) watched a freshly emerged queen consume some. Since the royal jelly consumption play such a massive role in...
  20. Re: What are the advantages/disadvantages of using 8 frame hives vs. 10?

I have all 8 frame mediums, and while I don't regret going with mediums I do somewhat regret going 8 frame. The lighter weight sure is nice, but the problem with 8 frame equipment is that there is...

  22. Re: Person wants their swarm back - Would you give it to them?

So urban beekeeping isn't legal where you are at? If that's the case then I would not give them back for sure.

    Why are queen cells dark?

Since new wax is so light in color, why are queen cells so dark? Am I just not seeing them before there has been heavy traffic over them or is there something special about wax for a queen cell?

  25. Re: Treatment-Free, Winter 2012-2013, How's it going?

I started beekeeping a bit late last year with 2 packages, all into 8 frame mediums on PF-125 frames. A record drought made it rough going so I fed heavily from mason jars through the top. At the...
