    Re: Bee Forensic

    Scott.
We recently had temps near 0 at night and teens during the day. They are surrounded by trees so wind isn't generally a problem.

    Bee Forensic

Today I went to the apiary to check on my bees only to find that I have lost 4 hives in the last 2 weeks. Every hive had at least 75 lbs of honey left in the upper body, some of the clustered bees...
  3. Re: Newbie trying to find alternative ways to get involved with beekeeping

Well I would start reading and learning as much as you can from that. I would also get involved with the bee club and I am sure there will be someone there willing to show you the ropes in exchange...

    Re: Cutting Foam Board

I use a hot wire. An electric fence wire and battery charger work good. This may not be worth it if you just have a little to do. Table saw does work also just not as clean of an edge.

Re: Wow smell the goldenrod nectar.

2 weeks ago I added a honey super to each of my 10 hives. Today I did a quick inspection and found very little honey on any of the hives. Should I expect to get a harvest from goldenrod. It is in...

Re: Wow smell the goldenrod nectar.

I can smell mine over 50 feet away. I hope to get at least 1 super off of every hive with golden rod.

Re: What are some of your cost-saving methods?

I build as much as I can myself including medium boxes and my extract. Something like frames and foundation I still buy.

    Re: Water water water, help?

You need to make what they use right now unavailable then supply them with another source. I had the same problem with my chickens so I just locked them in the coop for 2 days then put out a small...

Why can't I raise my own queens.

So this year I tried to raise my own queen in a split from a larger hive. I saw queenn cells, I saw the emerged queen and I even had eggs at one point. 2 weeks later I wanted to check on the queen...

    Biggest swarm yet.

I just want to brag a bit on the swarm I got today. I am guessing it was 8 or more pounds, and completely filled a 10 frame box. The swarm was 15 feet up an evergreen but wasnt to hard to get to. ...
  12. Re: I want to move a frame full of brood from one hive to another...

I select the frame then give it a good smack on the top of the origional hive so that all the bees fall back into the hive. The few that are left won't make a difference.
  13. Re: when will the flow be with such a early spring?

Well I added a super yesterday because we have a lot of dandelions coming up now. That is how I usually gauge it, I have seen drone brood for a couple weeks now and that is another indication of...

    Re: maple flow is on

Well if I had queens I could split now and I think it would be good for all this pollen and honey bound stuff. I think the biggest thing holding me back is drones. I don't split until I am...

    Re: maple flow is on

Just got into my hive yesterday and found a lot of beetles tons of pollen and drone brood. I run 2 deeps and a medium, swapped these around and added some beetle traps. I also added some drone...

    Talk about a close one

So today I did my first hive inspection of the year and boy was I surprised. First I found that I have an infestation of SBH in March. Next I found only a couple frames of capped brood and 1 frame...

    Re: Hive dimensions

I agree it would be nice to build to standard lumber sizes. I have found that if you look for a local saw mill they will cut the lumber to whatever length and width you want. The only catch is that...

I Noticed the same thing today, the maple in my yard just opened today. I haven't inspected this year but I did just add some sugar syrup because the hive was light. This week looks good but there...

    Re: hive stand question

2x4 will be fine to hold a couple of hives, I would get treated to make sure they last the 5 years. I am doing the same thing this year but will use 2x10s

    Re: Extractor ?

I put a servo and resolver on mine and it runs about 500 RPM. It is a belt drive, it is simple to adjust gear ratios.

    Re: My first queenless hive

It happens to the best of beekeepers. I would suspect from the amount of drones you have that the queen failed assuming that you don't have any laying workers. Of course the bee math would say that...

Re: Lifetime of 2:1 Sugar Syrup

Typically sugar syrup will mold quickly but not sure at those temps. I would say if it looks okay and smells okay it is okay.
