    Re: SHB - Varroa issues

UMMMMM, I don't think you are supposed to leave honey supers on when you treat with checkmite???? I could be wrong
  2. Re: Why do they build only drone comb if I use foundationless next to foundation?

Basically what he said. If you are going to do foundationless you have to allow them their drone frames. I just put them in the 1,2 or 9,10 position and when they need drones queen will lay in...

Re: D Coates 5 frame Nuc Design

Every end grain gets painted with titebond 2 and then the exterior paint. I have boxes that are 4 or 5 years old and are still in service. It's a small step to make the equipment last for years and...

    Re: Medium hives

You'd be better served to set up a trade with someone who wants a deep frame of brood and has a medium to trade or wait till it's empty, you can keep it in position 1 or 10 and it should end up empty...

    Re: Medium hives

I transitioned 2 hives from deeps to mediums this year for a friend I was helping. I think the hardest part to get over is just getting started. We took the deep box off of the bottom board and...

Re: Another Hive has absconded due to shb

I think you're being unfair to terrorists, SHBS are much worse :D , I call them spawn of satan LOL.
  7. Re: EXTRACTING FOUNDATIONLESS and WIRELESS FRAMES

I helped friends extract yesterday with a new Maxant extractor. We did 3 deep frames 1 of which had foundation, the other 2 were foundationless. not a blowout to bee seen anywhere.
  8. Re: EXTRACTING FOUNDATIONLESS and WIRELESS FRAMES

I had blow out when I tried extracting my frames radially. When I switched to do them tangentially I hardly ever get blow out. My extractor (maxant) has a nice basket that supports the comb...

Re: hive beetles and comb gnawing

Not to mention the smell of disruption (shaking the bees out is certainly a disruption) will attract the SHBS. Spawn of SAtan they are.

    Re: Foundationless frames

Not what you asked for, but it's just as easy or easier to buy wedge top frames, pop the wedge out, turn it 90 degrees then staple glue it back into place.
Here's a video with me showing and...

As far as I know there aren't plans per say, I just measured the outside dimensions of box added a little and built the frame of migratory from cheap 1by from Lowe's then a plywood top well painted....

Here's a quick video I did on my buckwheat: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rlG_YKJah9s&list=UUUJpugtC8DATt5CampP4RtA

  14. Re: Planting 1 1/2 acres of Yellow Sweet clover. Cost approx 150.00. Is it worth it

I'd plant a 100 acres of poison ivy if it was good for the bees and I'm highly allergic :lookout:

    Re: Hives crashing, SHB?

My opinion is it's never too late to save them. I've moved hives down to nucs in the middle of winter and gotten them thru here in Missouri.

    Re: Hives crashing, SHB?

If there is enough to save, you drop it down to a 5 frame nuc box. You could also consider putting in CD bait traps for SHBs, I'm comfortable with the one that uses a recipe of borax (or boric acid),...

Re: flies hanging out in and around hive

Have you been in the hive lately? If not, take a quick look and just make sure everything is ok. I'd be worried about a small hive beetle infestation. I've noticed that flies really love the gooey...

Is this your only hive? If you had a second hive you could steal a frame of eggs/larva and give it to the hive in question. If they need a queen you have given them the resources to make one, if...

Michael you have more experience with the bees than I do, but my opinion is that wax production in bees is somewhat similar to say hair growing or nail growing in humans. Bees of a certain age make...
