  1. Re: Cluster with the Queen on the outside of the hive?

Well it gets better. I got home and checked the hive. The queen and only about 100 bees were on the top of the lid. There are no food reserves left except the pollen patty. Only a couple of dead bees...
  2. Re: Cluster with the Queen on the outside of the hive?

Ray: I'm with you- I don't do any inspections until I can start rearing queens. I was just walking through the yard when I saw all the bees outside the hive. I do put pollen patties on that's about...
  3. Re: Cluster with the Queen on the outside of the hive?

The area is fenced to protect from bears. There are skunks and raccoons in the area, but sign they are targeting hives.
  4. Re: Cluster with the Queen on the outside of the hive?

Not sure- the nuc seemed healthy. They are low on food reserves, but have a patty they were feeding on. There is mold in the hive, but there's mold in a lot of hives because of the rain this year.

It was a nice sunny 62 degree day here. I was walking around the bee yard checking everything out and found a medium cluster of bees on the outside of the hive. I checked the inside of the hive and...

    Re: Buckeye is blooming hard.

Where do you move your bees to avoid Buckeye? Is there a higher elevation you can get out of it?
  8. Re: feeding sugar blocks - too much at one time?

I'm not using sugar bricks in CA. I've been using pollen patties and the bees are using them and brooding up. Is there a need for sugar bricks in the warmer climate?

    Re: feeding on cold days

I would wait for a warm sunny day before going into the hive.

    Re: Flatbed Build Ideas

My truck is the shop starting the build process. A couple of questions.

Does anyone use the ratchets that are mounted on rails under the truck bed? If so are they worth the extra investment?

    If...

    Re: They are all dead...

Unfortunately the certain part has passed. I'm not sure you will find anything in what's left of the hives that will prove it was mites. That's where monitoring is key. If you detect an increasing...

Prescience? You asked what you thought you did wrong and what you could do better. My answer was not meant to be mean. My suggestion was Manage Varroa. Managing Varroa is basic beekeeping and...

All the sign that is needed is listed above. Before purchasing bees this year I would decide on how your are going to manage varroa in your hives. Ignoring varroa mites will result in the same...

Re: Feeder shim or empty medium

I buy 1x1 1/2 inch wood strips at Home Depot. The front and and back are cut 16 1/4 and the sides are 18 3/8. The fronts and backs butt to the sides. I glue them and then use 3 staples on each joint....

Re: Feeder shim or empty medium

I use feeder shims as they take up less space. I can make them up for about a $1.00 each.

Re: Possible 100 watt bulb for warmth

I've had good luck placing a weak colony or split on top of a stronger colony with a double screen dividing them. The migratory lids have a auger hole for ventilation.
