Re: Wax moth issue where to get bt aizawai?

My 6 year old bag was in the zip lock bag he shipped it to me in.
Its still dry granules & good. I gave it to a friend when I bought my new bag.
  2. Re: Newbie can't find nucs, how bad off am I starting with packages?

I think everyone should try packages at least once. Its very interesting, & a good learning experience.

Re: Is Bearding a Sign of Swarming?

Except for the fact that they will beard all summer long & not swarm.
I have to agree that it can't be used as an indicator, even though they might also beard before swarming.

    Re: Newbee Bee-mergency!

There might have been a loose queen in the package, so 2 queens in the hive. One was evicted.
  5. Re: Just added a frame of eggs/brood, to a queenless hive, now what?

Laying workers won't start until after the replacment queen fails to return from mating. That's over 30 days. If they need a queen they will raise it from that frame.

Re: Wax moth issue where to get bt aizawai?

I just bought new BT after using Sundance BT for 6 years. It was still working.
  9. Re: Just added a frame of eggs/brood, to a queenless hive, now what?

There is no reason to open the hive for the next 30 days. Sometimes we do more harm than good.

    Re: trying foundationless frames

I find the bees will make the first one or two frames drone brood in the spring. After they have a couple frames they draw worker brood.
If you take the drone frame away from them they will just...

Re: Freeze the Honey Comb before Sale

Some beekeepers I know store their comb honey in the freezer not just to kill moth larva, but also to slow crystallization.

Re: Wax moth issue where to get bt aizawai?

You don't spray BT in living beehives. Living beehives shouldn't have wax moth problems unless they're aren't enough bees in them.
The BT is sprayed on frames, then they are allowed to dry, & stored...
  13. Re: How long should I have the entrance reducer on the smallest opening

The population of you're hive will be dropping the first 30 days. After that you will get back up to the amount of bees you started with in a couple weeks.
So there isn't a need to increase the size...

    Re: why nucs so late?

Can they raise queens in Maine that early?
I would assume the reason you're buying nucs from the NE states is to get local bees. You wouldn't want to pay for a CA queen in that nuc.

If you take a cutting from a male plant you will get an identical male clone of the parent plant.

  21. Re: Willow Trees For Bees, Weeping Willow or Black Willow

The creek at our farm has several willows that the bees work for nectar & pollen in the spring. We also have a weeping willow that they work.
I'm glad they are there for early spring feed.

Re: Small Cell and Large Cell in the same Hive

I use standard 5.? frames in the honey supers. Our thick summer honey extracts easier from those.
I don't think you'll get a noticeable increase in the volume of honey in the frames.
  25. Re: Getting bees NEXT spring - how to become sustainable?

Don't start with too many you're first year, just learn how to be a good beekeeper. After that you can be sustainable with under 20 hives.
Of course it all depends on you're ultimate goal.
