Re: Honey is thick and grainy

Sounds like honey is crystallizing. If you are doing crush & strain try setting it in the hot sun. That will help it to flow better. Also note that after you get the honey out, it will probably...

    Re: Carpenter bee issue

Make sure you seal ALL holes. If adult can't get in to feed larvae it will die..Also paint over sealed holes deters them from returning.

    Re: deformed wings... bad sign....

Probably not. Takes time for older bees to die off. Do a mite count to see what your load is. Then decide.
  6. Re: Help needed in KY!! queen cell and active queen

If you have the resources to do a split then do so. If not then let the bees do there thing. Just keep an eye on them to make sure they don't wind up queenless.

Re: Which bee vac and why

I own the Owens for about 8 years. It's a good vac but there are a few tricks you need to know about it. The Robo Vac is a superior unit, but it sounds like for your needs the Owens will do the trick.
  8. Re: Liability concerns for removing swarms and cutouts

Mr Beeman is right. Spell everything out clearly to homeowner up front. Don't be afraid to put it in the contract & don't be afraid to walk away if homeowners hesitant. You might loose a little work...

    Re: Newbee questions

Add the extra bars between perfectly drawn frames of brood. This will give you a much better chance of getting straight combs. You can also add 1 between the broad and honey.
  21. Re: Photographs from 3rd Inspection, May 31st, Day 38 - Is that a Queen Cup?

Sometimes but generally no. If the decision to swarm has already been made by the colony removing the cups won't help. Better to closely manage hive so as to prevent swarming. Lots of drones during...

  24. Re: Can someone explain to me how the bars in a Warre work?

Not an "idiotic" question at all! Frame spacing is just as important in a Warre as any other hive. I have seen some drill holes through the ends of the bars & use smaller screws to hold bars in...
