Re: One brood chamber versus two

The "natural" volume of a feral hive is about the same as 1 deep. That is a hive that is not geared to make a lot of surplus honey. I make splits after the honey-flow and the bees will be in nucs. ...

    Re: Hello from Spartanburg SC

    Welcome to Beesource

I am sure there is a local bee club in Spartanburg. The dues are probably a lot cheaper than replacement colonies.

Re: how do you make your inner covers?

That is actually a pretty good name for the SHBs that hang out on the inner cover. Those are the easiest ones to squish.

Re: Not seeing any drone yet?

The guy I am buying a couple of packages from had to delay delivery by a week because his queens weren't mated. I do have some drone cells, but no drones that I see.

    Re: Diagnosis help.

Doesn't look like FB to me. More like laying worker. I am concerned about the little yellow things in the otherwise empty cells. Have you pulled any of them out. If they are scales and they come...

Re: Found capped swarm cell today!

Never waste a good swarm cell. Those make the best queens.
  9. Re: bee feeding ? opinion needed, not taking the sugar water

Bees won't eat hamburger when they can have prime rib. Take the sugar bottles off as long as nectar is coming in. The sugar water will probably ferment. You shouldn't have to feed again til' late...

Re: Swarm control without extra drawn comb

If you do not have brood in the bottom chamber, try a Demaree manuever. If you do have brood in the bottom, you might add some drawn comb adjacent to the brood nest there.

    Re: Black Comb

I do it the other way around. Rotate the brood comb out and keep the honey comb. I am transitioning to foundationless. This will be the 1st year. If the honey comb causes problems in the...

Re: Wax moth cocoon destruction options

Either freeze the frames or put them in a box and set it on a fire ant mound. Fire ants are good for something.

Re: Fast way to grow one nuc to 40 hives

Get Michael Bush's book on practical beekeeping. You won't get 40 colonies out of 1, but he does seem to make a fast buildup out of a couple of packages.

I use the scraps from building boxes. The openings can be cut with a dado stack or a hand saw and a chisel.

    Re: Honey B Healthy Recipe

Pro health from Mann Lake costs about 75% of what HBH does. I do not use the recommended dose. A very small splash of pro-health and a very small splash of apple-cider vinegar goes in a 5 gal...

Make sure your hives are level in all directions and don't violate bee space rules.

When using packages, it is a great idea to treat with oxalic acid at the 7 day mark. The brood will not be...

Re: Safe Poison for carpenter ants

Try plain cornmeal 1st. If it doesn't work move do something deadlier. I have even gotten rid of fire ants (in small colonies) with cornmeal.
