Re: do ten frame boxes increase starvation?

I as understand it, The langstroth 10 frame hive we call "standard" was patented back in 1852.

You have to remember, the equipment your using (if its a standard 10 frame box) is over 150...

    Re: When to split

Many mention drones in some way as a sign. Which is good advise if your relying on raiseing your own queen. (she needs to mate before she can start to lay)

but, if you already have a mated...

    Re: dipping boxes

paint the 1x10's with a roller before assembling. layed out on sawhorses they would take about 10 min to paint at a fraction of the cost.

  5. Re: Wanting an opinion on a reasonable number of hives to learn the business with

I think the "learning curve" of going from 20 to 40 or 40 to 80 is a lot more difficult than just "having" 100 that you do pollination services with.

what part of the business are you going to...

    Re: The price of Honey.

I dont prescribe to the premise that either of those two things (hobby/craft sales vs bulk/wholesale) are connected in terms of "the bee industry as a whole"

which is to say if i sell 50 or 100 or...
  9. Re: Look what I found - an ancient American Bee Journal

    4.50 in 1956 is almost $40 in 2015. 1.50 in 1956 is $13 in 2015

so if queens are $20-25 thats at least "close" to inflation. the $125 i payed for 3lb package this year on the other hand....

    Re: Refractometer question

the one you have is for wine/beer etc. it is way to low for the sugar content of honey.

the proper honey one will have 3 scales and will have a scale for % water directly.

There is strong evidence suggesting that trace amounts of...
  18. Re: Can hone harvest be delayed until winter or even spring?

generally for strong hives leaving capped honey on is not an issue.

You do not want to open the hive during winter unless you have a warm day. (60deg F)
