    to me its once started regardless if they was purchased or caught swarms to never have to buy bees to be able to maintain colony numbers and even make modest increases every year if one chose to.

    could remove a few to make splits if you wanted otherwise I wouldn't be to worried about removing any, sounds like there replacing the new queen.

    no way they would have time to replace the comb and get stores built up for winter if you must remove the honey would look at ways to possibly extract it without destroying the comb.

    well I noticed it yesterday and still doing it today but found out it works fine in compatibility view mode, guess will just have to use it that way not sure what the difference is.

    would probably have atleast a few supers and quit worrying about how many bees the hive may have, those tall hives are mostly honey and dont actually have anymore bees as one with a couple of boxes...

    would probably work not sure how well a division board will work for you, would need one for each box so you could remove each half of the frames and then remove the box and still maintain seperate...

    the original hive will have alot of bees and resources can withstand the population loss better, than a nuc with 2 frames of brood with very few bees less resources have alot harder time building up...

    hard to beat a sealed lead acid battery might take a look at dimensions and weight and see if one would work for you guess the aa may be appealing cause of size but when your talking 12 aa its not...

    you probably wont be happy with the run time, but you could push the voltage up to 14 pretty easily by using 11 or 12 batteries at 1.2 wich would be normal voltage for sonar to run at with charging...

    would be 2.3 amp hours, you dont gain any amp hours by hooking batteries in series they have to be hooked in parallel to increase your amp hours but you need them in series to get 12 volts.

    probably not alot can be done other than choosing locations where they are not easily seen, considering the hives are africanized any one stealing honey is probably not going to be stopped by a chain...
