    How to sell bee colonies

I think I'll have 7 hives of bees this spring. They're in ten frame mediums from 2-4 high. I'm hoping to take off some honey this spring. I had two last spring and caught three early swarms and did...
  2. Re: Can hone harvest be delayed until winter or even spring?

Thanks everybody. I've heard about the seaweed. I may try that. I don't know what my doctor has in mind yet. Waiting on some more advanced tests.

We do have wax moths. I've only seen them in the...
  3. Can honey harvest be delayed until winter or even spring?

I had two hives last winter from one swarm I caught the summer before last. My goal for the year was to have four hives and a nuc or two by fall and finally my first few pounds of honey. After...

Re: Police made me move my hives..

I'd find something legal but much more annoying to put in the yard instead. Maybe borrow some friends' dogs for a while.

Re: Small bottles, how to use

They'd be great for seed savers. They would hold a lot of tomato seeds.
  6. Re: Getting first all medium hives... and questions about box quantity and using nucs

I wish I'd have gone with the 8 frame. I like one-piece plastic frames better. I like my migratory cover with wood shims for a top entrance a lot better than my telescoping cover. That's from Michael...

    Re: wax rotation

I was wondering about 60 year-old foundation and also how the frames held together that long. Pretty sure they didn't have TiteBond.

Re: how to get bees into hive , not a bee keeper.

I used a plastic tray made for dry walling and scooped some into the box. When you get the queen in the box the others follow her in. They weren't aggressive at all. I rushed getting ready the...

Do you have a veil and gloves? I caught my first 3 swarms this spring. It was fun.

Re: Caught my first swarm without a trap

Thanks, Gary. I'll keep you posted. I know of four hives a mile away and one porch half a mile, so I'm hoping they weren't mine.

I really wasn't prepared to catch a swarm that way. I should have...

Caught my first swarm without a trap

I was out weedeating and noticed my dog looking at something about 4 feet up a young plum tree. It's about 40 feet from 3 of my hives. The temperature had just dropped 10 degrees suddenly. It was...
  15. Re: Getting bees NEXT spring - how to become sustainable?

Lots of good advice above. I've only had bees two years, so I'm no expert, but since no one has said anything about the frames, guess I will. I started with the F frames. The hive I bought made an...

    Weather for mating flight

How good does the weather have to be for a successful mating flight? How warm? Can it be a little windy or rainy? Thanks.

    Re: Rethinking Dandelions...

I like it Michael. I live on the edge of 10-15 undeveloped but occasionally mowed lots. I've been tempted to take a walk in the dark with seeds in my pockets. Probably clover. If I did dandelions ....

    Re: Rethinking Dandelions...

I wont use chemicals just to have a perfect lawn. Even before I had bees, I liked the clover. I don't like the dandelion seed heads but don't try to kill them. I tried to plant English lawn daisies...

    Re: Coates Nuc question

Mine are only a year old. No age problems but something sure likes to chew on the corners. Guess the glue is tasty. Hasn't weakened them, I don't think. I used the half in plywood.

Re: Moved hive. Queen might have fallen out.

Thanks. Just a little worried. It was getting dark and I didn't want to disturb them with a light. They hadn't made it back into the hive yet. Why would they need a ladder?

Moved hive. Queen might have fallen out.

I just moved a hive from one side of my yard to a new stand on the other side. The boxes twisted and I lost maybe two cupfuls of bees. They were gathering on the old stand, so I put an empty box...

Is the coating still reddish pink? I always thought a less flower-like coating would be safer. Maybe dark brown?
