Re: Best Topical for Bee Sting

I will vouch for both uses, I prefer the new cooling gell to the old greasy standard just use seperate containers and label them, don't want to use the wrong one on your face lol

    Re: Cheap Nucs?

Let's face it the longer you hang onto a nuc the more it's going to cost you in time and possibly feed so the later you sell it the higher the price should be.

Re: bees are dead but long live the mice

    Bees will clean it up
  9. Re: Easiest type of cell builder for a beginner

the benifit is you just lift the box and set it on top of a colony..... no digging through frames moving them over. If you run 8 frame equipment you could use an 8 frame starter with the same...
  10. Re: Why top bar hives don't require queen excluder?

because people generally don't care where the queen lays in a TBH. For what it's worth, the only reason I have ever needed an excluder was to shake bees through in order to find a junk queen in a...
  11. Re: $10 to make a vaporizer, so why buy one for $190?

That same torch won't heat water past 212 (at sea level) what makes you think it will heat OA past it's boiling point ? As long as the vapor can exit freely it will never heat past it's boiling...
  12. Re: $10 to make a vaporizer, so why buy one for $190?

  14. Re: Walts nectar management and single deeps

Seriously I wintered in 3 mediums they had open cell in the bottom box with honey on the edges that domed about 1/2 in into second box remainder of second box was full, and they skipped past it ...
  15. Re: Minimum number of hives to be self sustainable and TF?

it's more like figure out what your avg winter loss is, avg life span of a single colony and then figure out how many you need to keep based off those numbers.
  16. Re: Minimum number of hives to be self sustainable and TF?

a local guy gets by with about 10 ( 10 is his target going into winter) He usually doesn't lose more than one or two and makes splits from his others to replace. This wasn't always the case when...
  17. Re: What is white wax and when is it first seen

white wax is just fresh wax produced by the correct age worker bees like you would find on freshly capped honey or freshly drawn comb.
  18. Re: Walts nectar management and single deeps

Re: Aggressive Top Bar Hives Dilemma

FYI I have never dealt with a hive quite this hot so take this with a grain of salt, but what HARLEY would do is order queens from outside the area, On the day you get your shipping notice, make...

    Re: overwinter nuc question

I use migratory style covers on all my hives except for the new one I'll be using this yr that my daughter won at bee school. I simply cut a piece of plywood to fit the hive and a rock holds it...

    Re: My new nuc swarmed

They may have been too far into swarm mode by the time you moved them into the new hive. I am learning that I need to read the broodnest better when placing them, In my case I was warned they were...

    Re: My new nuc swarmed

Yip they can expand very fast, I used to let them sit for a day or two before I messed with them much, so from now on they will immediately get a second box as soon as they get placed.
  24. Re: Is my queen above the excluder and laying in my honey super?

Tim KS has the right idea if in fact you only have one queen ( most likely you only have one that slipped through ) If by the rare chance you have 2 you can set the top box off and you have a nice...
  25. Re: Is my queen above the excluder and laying in my honey super?

if there is eggs and larva in the super and you have an excluder on, you either have a queen that slipped through or two queens.... Checking for fresh eggs and larva under the excluder can verify...
