Re: Could someone explain "gap" please?

If you read back through the thread you'll notice multiple different configurations of boxes being discussed ... and all of them are having success. ;)

    That's beekeeping.
  2. Re: Oxalic Acid Vaporization - Questions and Answers

    It does, thank you!

That might be some of the reasoning behind why they restrict vaporizing with "supers" on the hive. If you're only treating the brood boxes, the bees will have it cleaned up...

Re: Heard Queen Piping for first time

I clearly remember the first time I heard a queen piping. She was on a frame I was holding during an inspection. It was unforgettable. Very cool!

What I also found fascinating was when she piped,...

Re: Ventilation for the top of your hive

Anyone ever tried propping up the cover to allow more ventilation?

Staple window screen across the inner cover hole and notch. No robbers can get in and you can prop the cover up as...
  5. Re: Oxalic Acid Vaporization - Questions and Answers

    Thank you.
I've never had an issue with residues, just a question out of curiosity. Something a chemist would be able to answer I guess.
  6. Re: Oxalic Acid Vaporization - Questions and Answers

Glad you brought that up, thought it was just me.

My question is more focused on what happens to the coating of crystals naturally over time, without the help of the bees cleaning things up.

Re: Booming to dead in 5 weeks

Those are my thoughts as well. Or place the inner cover above the moisture board to create an insulating "dead air" space between the cover and moisture board. As long as there is somewhere the air...

Re: Booming to dead in 5 weeks

I don't use "moisture boards" so I wonder if you could help me understand what this is. Whatever it is, if it is "above" the inner cover it might not really be helping to reduce condensation forming...

    Re: 3rd year hive cleaning

I wait until warmer weather before doing any major housekeeping chores like you are asking about. When doing frame manipulation to prevent swarming seems to be the best time for me, early to mid...
  11. Re: What is white wax and when is it first seen

Walt, I have a question regarding the lull period.

If one were to begin "stimulative" feeding of pollen patties and light syrup with an established colony a few weeks before it is typically...

    Re: is it time?

Can you send some warm weather up our way? ;)
Going into the 20's again tonight. I thought it was spring.
  13. Re: Extractor-less honey by- "Honey Flow" - Flow Hive

This is brand new untested technology, Ace.

Cars have been around for decades, we have a little bit of history on them. If suddenly there was a car on the market that ran on water, but had no...

    Re: is it time?

It's not a problem at all adding more boxes. Just be very quick if you plan to pull and inspect any frames of brood in these temperatures. Good luck this spring!
  15. Re: Extractor-less honey by- "Honey Flow" - Flow Hive

You make a good point about traditional suppliers not making instructions readily available on beekeeping methods and procedures describing how to properly use the equipment they are selling. I guess...

    Re: is it time?

What is it you are looking for?

If you are planning a full inspection to look everything over, a complete evaluation, I would wait for warmer weather.

Quickly pulling and inspecting a frame...
  17. Re: repainting hives; is re-priming desirable?

It wouldn't hurt to quickly scuff any bare wood with sandpaper before priming again. There's a reason it didn't stick the first time ... oils, etc. A few seconds with the sandpaper could make all the...

Re: How do you build population?

Well, I'm ducking now. Craps is in the air.

RayMarler had some good ideas for you, pretty solid bet I think.
  19. Re: What is white wax and when is it first seen

I usually start seeing white wax between Apple & Locust bloom. It does seem to coincide with swarming ... when the swarms are issuing. If I wait until white wax to work on swarm prevention it's...
  20. Re: Extractor-less honey by- "Honey Flow" - Flow Hive

Don't mean to throw a wet towel on this, but I wonder what unintended consequences might be felt by new beekeepers and the beekeeping community in general if this ends up being a complete failure in...

  22. Re: Beekeeping Methodology, Definitions, and Repeatedly Beating a Dead Horse

After I purchased Walt Wright's manuscript and read through it a couple of times I finally grasped the concept of checkerboading for swarm control and nectar management. I had been hearing many...

    Re: Kelley vs Dadant smoker

That's funny, I never paid any attention to this. Mine has the exact same thing stamped under the "D" logo. I don't see a "1". Doesn't appear to be worn off, just not there.
  25. Re: Beekeeping Methodology, Definitions, and Repeatedly Beating a Dead Horse

That's a good list Cyan. Looks like you have a pretty good handle on things.

I would also add "Checkerboarding" to the list as a constant source of confusion and debate. That term and procedure...
