Re: First time removal. Am I over my head?

I recommend to get some bee through traditional means (buying a nuc or package) and keep them for a year. Then collect a few swarms the following year. In the third year, you may want to think about...

Re: Bee Vacuum plans? Easy on bees....

I have no pics, but built a bushkill style vac out of about $40 materials. It uses an external vacuum that I already had. Google search bushkill bee vac to get an idea. It works great.

    Re: Cotton

So, I am in South Texas. Mesquite is still blooming, and we have had some recent rains to bump the regular brush. I can move to thousands of acres of cotton in a week or two. Should I go?

I had a call from a potential customer the other day. They would like me to keep and manage a few hives on their property. They are part of the "save the bees" thought process and are not looking for...

Looks great. Can you provide a parts list? Is the heat gun itself part of the $100?

Re: Advice on locking up cutouts?

Our wild bees are very prone to abscond, I have had swarms leave a queen in a clip in their new box while the rest of them left to find a new home. Just last week, I had this happen twice. Both time...

    Re: bee venom collector

Also looking for information on shipping and handling the venom, as well as price sold. Considering this as an option to increase income to the apiary, but need more information.

    Re: Oxalic acid fogger

If this will work, you should only need the smallest amount of water required for the OA to go into solution.
  13. Re: First Time - African? - Tips - Taking swarm out of house

I have read they are more prone to absconding. I would imagine that this is amplified when they face severe disturbances.

Containing the queen is not foolproof. Last year I had two swarms that...

  15. Re: First Time - African? - Tips - Taking swarm out of house

In my experience with South Texas wild colony cutouts, if you do not contain the queen for at least 3 days (a week preferred), at best there is a 50% chance of them staying. If I find the queen, I...
  16. Re: "A swarm in July, isn't worth a fly." Still July in a hot climate?

Yup. I buy it in 25 or 50 sacks. Can usually be found for just under $.50/#
  17. Re: "A swarm in July, isn't worth a fly." Still July in a hot climate?

I had swarm calls into October of last year, and they started in January this year. If you can buy sugar, any swarm can be worth collecting.

  21. Re: Quick Death to my Africanized hybrid bees - How to kill a bee hive in a day

For future requeening, queens can usually be found year round out of Hawaii. They may or may not be quality producers or a hygienic strain, but you can usually find a gentle space filler.

  23. Re: What is the current consensus on best bee vac design?

Use the largest diameter of hose you can. Pressure kills more bees than ridges in hose. Larger hoses allow less pressure. Smaller hoses allow more pressure.
  24. Re: First Time - African? - Tips - Taking swarm out of house

    Where are you located?

I would allow the current colony to grow as strong as possible. Then, in the early spring, make your split. A split now could lead to two weak colonies that fail to thrive. In the spring, splitting a...
