Yes, it is done successfully. Search for Michael Palmer, sustainable apiary and wintering nucs. You'll find some great info and advice.

Re: Slatted Rack Entry and Exit Route?

I have slatted rack and the bees have had no problems getting up into the hive. They climb the outside walls or lift themselves up by flying.

Re: Thousands of bees, not an ounce of honey

If you have a digital kitchen (meat) thermometer, that's all you need, and a bit of confidence. Of course neither the candyboard nor the fondant is helpful if the colony fails mid winter. Now's the...

Re: Thousands of bees, not an ounce of honey

A search for candyboard will get recipes and instructions to make your own. This should be considered insurance in the event the bees go through all the 60+# of honey you have left on the hive for...

After transferring the colony into a new box, did you leave the hive in the same location as it was previously?

Re: Thousands of bees, not an ounce of honey

I think the timing reference was for deer hunting season. http://www.wildlife.state.nh.us/Hunting/hunting_dates_and_seasons.htm

At this time of year, if there is no food in the hive, nectar, honey...

Re: Thousands of bees, not an ounce of honey

I am seeing the same here in SW NH. Also, very low to no pollen stored. We are just now coming out of a nectar dearth, the early goldenrod is now blooming and bees are bringing in pollen again....

Re: DWV is it to late

In addition to the nuc I would hunt up the current queen and remove her from the infested hive and give a brood break to the colony. If there's no brood there is no place for the varroa to hide.

    Re: Coffee Grounds?

If you use flavored coffee they may be attracted to the flavor scent. Otherwise I would lean toward moisture being the lure.

Spencer, unless your bees have a truly fantastic first season, you'll get a taste or two. In our neck of the woods the first year honey is for the bees to eat for 7 long months of winter... You will...

    Re: Burlap for Inner Covers?

Mike, do you have a link to an information source about burlap coffee bean sacks being treated with insecticides? Do all coffee growing regions of the world put green beans into treated sacks?
