    Re: Invasion!!

I had a second hive that got destroyed.
Well 1 less to try and overwinter.

I thought I still had bees in there, but I noticed fighting outside when I was home for lunch.
So what I did was to put...

    Re: Invasion!!

    Yes a total loss.
I think that hive died out because of a few reasons. I had not really closed off the entrance enough until a few weeks ago.
I was using an external entrance feeder on my other...

    Re: Invasion!!

Actually I was using a bucket feeder which was inside the hive. I put it on 1/2 inch mounts and I had it over the hole in this photo. I used a spare super body and lid to cover the whole feeder and...

Yes it looks like them. These are the ones I destroyed by the entrance.
That will put a dent in their population.

    Re: fall feeding ?

I have started to feed my 4 hives. I got 2 jar feeders, and 1 tub feeder. The quart jars get consumed in about 3 or 4 hours by my 2 story hive "Bellodonna", and Elizabedda takes about 4 or 5 hours....

Re: Combining to save my hive

    I have an update.
First, the brood hatched as it was a frame fully drawn with capped brood when I put it in there. So that hive has plenty of nurse and young bees.
    Second my marked queen is...

Re: Small hive beetle infested comb

What would happen if you took all that defecated honey, put it into a fermenter with some wine yeast, and some other solution and got the fermentation going.
Rack it a few times, and filter, and you...
  14. Re: Is early August too late to start a split in the northeast?

Usually when you do a split you want the nectar flow to still be going since they produce more comb earlier in the season as in early spring to summer. Otherwise you will need to feed the bees sugar...

Re: Combining to save my hive

    OK thanks,

I will recheck the hive as I need to add more frames to make it a full sized nuc.

Has anybody tried opening a larger hive and grabbing a (queen-less) frame and shake their nurse bees...
  18. Re: Beehive extremely weak, please help!!!

    12669Hi Potato,

I think you are referring to this as the 2nd queen:
I am not sure if that is one or not. She does appear to have a big belly.
The other photo may be a drone.

  20. Re: Beehive extremely weak, please help!!!

I am 2nd year as well. But I got 4 hives and 1 is weak.

    Can you post a photo?
