thats a swarm cell. they want to split.
looks like we realy are farmers, just with smaller livestock.
it sounds like vole droppings to me. i have had some this year but the havent hurt the comb yet.
yes. i lost a hive last year due to that. clean the upper enterence and they should be ok.
good luck.
it doesnt sound like a queen issue. something is in the hive or trying to get into the hive. thats what it sounds like to me.
sounds like they are being visited by a preditor. try to fence around them or put boards with nails in them around the hive. it has worked for me.
it's for the black bears. they love to tear the hives apart and eat the bees and brood.
you sould be ok after the first hard frost. that is temps in the twentys for several hours.
check out mn hygenic and russion bees.
it will only affect the following year if the drought continues. we had the wettest year i can remember here after a few dry summers. make sure they have enough stores of honey and pollen to get...
wont a 3/8" opening be too small for adaquate ventalation?
if they have less than two frames empty i would put one or two empty frames on the very outside of the bottom brood chamber. out there it wont hurt them if they dont use them since they will move up...
you may have nosema. if you have hbh you can mix it with your sugar syrup and sprinkle it directly into the cells the bees are on. this will sometimes get them to start feeding. i would give them...
im going to feed untill they stop taking it or it starts to freeze in the feeder. as long as the queen has room to lay it should be less feeding in the spring.
i have given 2 to each of my hives and they were gone in a week. i am looking forward to hearing what others do.
thats normal. as long as its drones and not workers i wouldnt worry about it.
thats great news. welcome to an enjoyable and sometimes frustrating addiction.
if you take out a container with you you can clean up a lot of that burr comb, it will make it easyer to manipulate...
i wouldnt wait to do an inspection. you need to find out if you have a laying queen or not. use the books and the internet to see what you are supposed to see in the hive. reduce the entrence to one...
where do i find homosote board?
nice pics waynesgarden. i wander why my upper entrence hasent done the trick.
thanks to all for the advice.
i have read that you are supposed to put an uncapped frame of honey in the upper super so the bees can move or consume the honey and the cluster can move up. it seems to me if you move 3 frames up...
go to brushy mountain bee farm website and find the videos section. there are a lot of videos (webinars) that will help you out. go to utube and search honey bees and you will find videos on all...
i would do the cutout on sight. when you get them hived leave them below the house untill dark. then close the enterence with screen and take them to the location they will be kept and remove the...
check out utube. there are a lot of cut out videos that will help alot. good luck.
i started feeding the second week of august. they filled two brood supers so i stoped feeding. it has been cold and rainy but they are still foraging. i was wondering if they may use up too much of...
