Re: Hello from snowy Fort Collins, Colorado

I have fond memories of Fort Collins -- we were there for a youth conference some years ago. One word of (perhaps unnecessary) advise, Even if you want to be treatment free, please make regular...

Re: Natural Apiary Jacket - any feed back ??

wear the veil, and shoes not sandals so they don't crawl under your toe and light you up.
it is possible for a sting on the eye to ruin your sight.

You'll need a posse too. Given previous posts, Beesource members might volunteer.

Re: Deep Frame Nuc transition to Medium Supers

One nuc supplier I know uses 5 frame boxes, 1 deep and 1 medium per colony.
The queens mate and are observed for pattern in the box.
He can sell from each colony once the frames are laid, either...
  5. Re: Smaller mass merchant selling beekeeping equipment

I saw a hive and plastic frames sitting at the end of an aisle of pesticides. I assume whatever I smell in that portion of the store got into the wax coating.
And yes, overpriced -- if someone has...

I hope TF learnings and discussions will always be available to us who aren't there -- maybe we'll get there, but even if not it is good to know what folks are thinking.
  9. Re: When do the bee supply companies have their sales?

Most will honor 2015 prices through January. That could be 5-8% off if you need something for this year.

Re: Cost of Performing Hive Inspections

$70 for a hive scale is a winner, in my book. Hobbyists (or maybe just "low tech" hobbyists like me) would probably be happier with the readout digital scale than a fancy data system.

Re: Can capping wax be "pure"?

You are absolutely correct. We cannot win the race to the bottom. And even if we could win the race, we would be the losers.

  12. Re: Mice snacked on honey- should I still extract it?

can you see yourself taking the area chewed upon and cutting out a slice of comb honey and eating it? (without any worries or revulsion?)

Re: Possible Negative Points of Three Deep Hives

Keith, that's an impressive picture to a little 10-hive hobbyist.
    What configuration do you move?
What led you to 3 deeps?

Re: Roof Angles - why toward bee entrances ??

I would suggest to keep level side-to-side for better comb building (they use gravity).

    Re: Hmm..what's this all about?

get the foam off with a spoon or perhaps try putting saran wrap on the top and it may lift it off (there is video on Beesource somewhere). it tastes good but doesn't look good to some customers.
