    Re: STOLEN HIVES!

Every year I see the same story. There is such a device! Apparently not everybody know about it. $100 for a device and $100 for the subscription service per year. Device starts transmitting only...
  2. Re: How to stimulate colony build up in the spring?

I'm not dogmatic about it. It depends on a size of a colony. For a smaller colony I do leave one deep. I make sure in the spring that they have enough room to expand.
  3. Re: How to stimulate colony build up in the spring?

They are still being raised this "winter".
  4. Re: How to stimulate colony build up in the spring?

Exactly the question I'm trying to find an answer for :) I'm not trying to change my whole operation - just to experiment with a couple of hives. Currently I don't downsize them. Just let them be...

Re: Randy Oliver from Scientific Beekeeping

As I stated before I completely agree with Randy on his point about scientific approach. However that approach includes things like peer review, controlled groups and other practices which, among...
  6. Re: How to stimulate colony build up in the spring?

I haven't noticed any blooms on maples here, although we don't have too many of them around my area. Do you go by the pollen color they are bringing?

Re: Randy Oliver from Scientific Beekeeping

I don't know. Neither does he.

And that's exactly why I compared his approach to that of the FDA. He could've as well said there are no studies that indicate that neonics are NOT causing major...

Re: Randy Oliver from Scientific Beekeeping

I would say that he represents a good balanced view of the commercial beekeeping community. Somewhere in the middle of his interview he made a statement that both hobby beekeeper and commercial...
  9. Re: How to stimulate colony build up in the spring?

I didn't shoot anybody down. I clarified the question, pointed out the things which didn't apply in my case and asked additional questions based on his response.

As you probably have read above -...
  10. Re: How to stimulate colony build up in the spring?

Thanks for all the ideas. I will definitely try to move honey boxes to the bottom to stimulate brood production. I like the idea of combining nuc with a hive, and was already planning on attempting...
  11. Re: How to stimulate colony build up in the spring?

Any particular syrup concentration? Do you remove frames with syrup before the flow starts?
  12. Re: How to stimulate colony build up in the spring?

    1. I don't treat my bees for anything. They seem to be doing just fine on their own for years now.
2 Can you elaborate on this point? How do you manage your colonies? What are the objectives?
    3...
  13. How to stimulate colony build up in the spring?

Ok, I realize that for the most of you the winter has just started and your hives are tucked away for the next 4-5 month. But here in Florida spring is not that far away, so I'm already trying to...
  14. Re: On the natural cell size of European honey bees

To be fair, the paper is not about whether bees can build smaller cell, or if they do nowadays or even if there are benefits of smaller cells. The paper about the fact that (or if) historically...
  15. Re: On the natural cell size of European honey bees

Regardless of the subject matter I have a problem with the author's methodology. The whole premise of the paper is to analyze the work and findings of certain authors. Instead of doing just that...
  16. Re: Why I decided not to put my hives out in the sun

To topic of the thread is misleading. There is no answer to the question in the body of the message. Now I won't be able to sleep wondering what was the reason. :)

All my hives sit in full...

    Re: The Fat Bee Man

I tried a couple of the suggestions from his videos - to use cinnamon for ant control, which didn't affect little black ants in the slightest and kind of annoyed my bees and put a salt block next to...

    Re: Chinese Tallow Trees

Recently I discovered a tree that turned out to be Chinese tallow tree next to our office. It was crawling with bees when it was blooming. I would guess if your bees ignored them, they must've had...

Re: The 150 rule (heat plus humidity)

If we follow this rule here in Florida we would be able to work with bees only in the winter :) I would suggest investing into a good ventilated bee suit. I myself use just a mesh bug jacket and...

Re: So much for reorienting themselves

Moving nukes is in violation of all kinds of international laws. Where did you get them from in the first place?! In Canada out of all places!

    Sorry, couldn't help myself.

    Put your nucs...
  23. Re: Are stings supposed to feel good, almost addictive

To answer your question - NO

Nobody says that you are a freak though. Look on the bright side. You would not have to invest into a bee suit - you can do your beekeeping naked and the meaner the...

Re: benefits and myths about SBB

Ok, now seriously, I'm not trying to 'bash' anybody by just asking to clarify a point. So you are ventilating your hive through the enlarged bottom entrance. However, bees don't have to guard the...
