Perhaps, but there is not that much and the flow has started so I am not too worried.

How many and when? - You guess

Last weekend (4/12) I put 6 swarm traps out in my backyard (big yard). Each has at least some drawn comb, nectar/sugar water and/or capped honey. Each also has a little lemon grass oil? This...

    Re: Comb in swarm traps

I found DiPel PRO DF - it has BT 54%. The other 46% is "other ingredients". Does this sound like the right stuff?

What's BT? I am sure that when you tell me it will be obvious but I am not remembering it right now.

    Comb in swarm traps

I have some good comb, with nectar as well as sealed honey. I also have open comb ready to be filled with eggs etc.

When you set a swarm trap, do you fill the trap with the comb or just place...

Re: Is anyone in NE Ohio?

I am in Bainbridge, very close to 422 & 306. I am new to this area so this was my first year with bees in Ohio. I got a couple nucs from a source in Medina and also use many of Michael Bush's...

    Re: SBB and pollen loss

Thank you AR for that apology and your thoughtful response.

Fortunately I have not had a significant SHB issue as you described to deal with. If I did I might very well use a freeman trap in...

    Re: SBB and pollen loss

AR, I said nothing about other's decisions or approach being wrong, I simply stated why I made the decisions that made regarding how I keep bees.

I understand about the varoa and considered...

Re: Splits -Tips for Finding the Queen

I usually remove an outside frame (rarely do I find a queen there but I do check it.) and then split the frames in the middle so the box is divided in half. The queen is less likely to cross the gap...

    Re: SBB and pollen loss

I am switching to solid bottom boards with upper entrances. Michael Bush' comments were compelling to me that that set up is much more like a natural bee tree which has a small upper entrance and...

    Re: swarm prep

When do people in Ohio put their swarm traps out? I am east of Cleveland and was planning to put them out in mid April and hope for capturing swarms in May and June.

Re: Splitting vs just adding a new box

Swarming is triggered by overcrowding in the hive, so I add additional boxes a little early and I pull some frames with brood as well as honey and pollen frames up into the new box and place empty...

Barry, I looked but could not find the limitation that is clearly stated. Will you please restate it for me?

I have subscribed to ABJ and Bee Culture at different times in the past. They are both good. My preference is Bee Culture.

Re: My neighbour's bees have it in for me...

I think that the most significant pieces of advice that you got are:
    - don't wear cologne/after shave/perfume when in your back yard - they will go after fairly aggressively
    - ask your neighbor to...
  21. Re: Ask This Old House now instructs beekeepers?

It was like watching an episode of the Brady Bunch - very clean, very simple, everything was new and beautiful and of course it is just that easy.

Why do bees leave the hive in December?

I am in Ohio and it is still early enough in the winter that our temperatures can swing from single digits to the low 50' in the course of a week. I am wondering why the bees come out of the hive ...
  23. Re: Cold nights and dead bees every morning

Crawling on ground can be a symptom of varoa. Crawling in circles... Well my uncle does that when he is drunk and my dog does it when he has to poop,
