Re: Small queen cell- Does it matter?

    jcolon,

It's always good to hear a success story. I'll know in a few weeks how she's doing when I check it again.

    Windfall,

That's encouraging. I'll watch her. She should be emerging in a few days.

Re: Small queen cell- Does it matter?

I wasn't sure what to do at this point but Michael Bush's comment gives me hope that she'll be fine. They may supersede her but I'll let them figure it out.

    Thanks for the input.

Small queen cell- Does it matter?

One of my hives is requeening and the cell is rather small. Will this mean she will be an inferior queen? Is her egg laying life shorter than a larger queen?

Re: Do you put weight on your top covers?

Mine are two bricks per hive-- like most responses. Only have added a half concrete block when the wind was fierce.

    Re: Reuse of plastic foundation

    AR Beekeeper,
Thank you for the information- I feel a lot more confident in using it. Right now it's the best I have for the new colonies.

    Re: Reuse of plastic foundation

I washed it so there would be room for the queen to lay her eggs. OR would they just remove the pollen to make room? And the crystallized honey?

Glad to know about their acceptance of it.

    Reuse of plastic foundation

I have some plastic foundation that is drawn out. I got it by way of buying nuc's. NOT anything I would have bought.

I need to have some drawn frames for my own nuc's and have tried to wash out...

Re: Putting sugar water feeder in hive

I was wondering about the vinegar as opposed to just water for the sugar bricks. Is there an additional plus to using vinegar?

    Thanks for all your replies.

Re: Putting sugar water feeder in hive

    Walter,

    Thanks for the "extra" ideas.

    fieldsofnaturalhoney

I'm inclined to think it was either a skunk or a opossum. I don't know if opossum's are interested in the sugar water but I did see...

Re: Putting sugar water feeder in hive

    Walter,

I'm glad I asked. That was what I was worried would happen. I don't know how the Ziplock baggies works in the hive.

Re: Putting sugar water feeder in hive

I didn't think about them having difficulty taking the syrup below 50 degrees. I may just try my first sugar block- a small one. How thick should these be?

    Thanks!

Putting sugar water feeder in hive

I have been trying to supplement the hive's food by using a boardman feeder in the front entrance. Twice the feeder has been knocked off the entrance. I would like to try feeding them inside, above...

Re: What are yellow flecks on dead bees?

Just checked the hive and that's what it is. (wax cappings and sugar). Unfortunately, this hive died. There were plenty of bees but I think I didn't give them enough ventilation.

    It's like a death...

Re: What are yellow flecks on dead bees?

Yes, they have sugar on top and yes, the photos aren't great.

So I guess it's wax cappings. I thought it might be but wanted to make sure.

    Thanks for the responses.

I'm hoping it's wax. Went out to take some pictures and will try to post them.

What are yellow flecks on dead bees?

I pulled out some dead bees from the bottom of one hive and it looks like light yellow flecks, of something, mixed with the bees. I'm not sure what this is. The weather should be high enough on...

Re: Did I overdue the sugar or what?

    Dave,

That could work too. It was a bit cool when I put the newspaper on and a breezy was kicking up and the bees were not happy. I sprayed a bit of water on the top of the sugar but my new...

Re: Did I overdue the sugar or what?

Thanks for the links- will check them out.

I think the next time I put sugar on the hives for winter stores I'll use the bricks. It was fine for the first time in fall to use loose sugar since it...

Re: Did I overdue the sugar or what?

I'm hoping there are some bees left come spring to make it a go. I did tilt the cover a bit for ventilation. We are in for a few days of very cold weather. Right now I have 3 hives and the largest is...

Did I overdue the sugar or what?

My hives went into winter with a good amount of bees. I put the mountaincamp sugar on the top bars which I do in some years. This time they had consumed all of it by the first week in Feb, so I added...

Re: Colony update here in Pa

Temps are in the mid 50's, overcast but my 3 hives are flying- Thank God!! I think this was the last chance for them. There was some mid and some dark "residue" outside the hives.

  23. Re: Type or brand of vitamins and electrolytes

    Mike,

Thank you for the information. I wasn't sure what the ingredients and the amounts should be. I'll look up a place to get it. I was hoping someone would reply to the "differences" in the...
  24. Re: Type or brand of vitamins and electrolytes

Just checked all the ingredients and the only difference is that mine has
    Vitamin B-12 --min. 2.5Mg. per 8 oz.,
    Ascorbic Acid--min. 32% -- max. 37% and
    Sodium-- min. 32 % -- max. 37%

    Is...
  25. Re: Type or brand of vitamins and electrolytes

Thanks for the information. I will check the ingredients with the one on ebay.
OK just a sprinkle. What would be the consequence if too much were added?
