OTS Queen Rearing - book review?

I was considering the book OTS Queen Rearing -- does anyone have experience with this book? Looks to be about 100 pages and sells for about $50 -- which seems kind of expensive.

    I would pay it if...
  4. Re: Thoughts about keeping one full honey super on all winter

Didn't think about that -- maybe that's my problem .. lol.
  5. Re: Thoughts about keeping one full honey super on all winter

I neglected to say that I was using screened bottom boards last year and have gone away with them this year - using all solid bottom boards.

I was thinking this winter of using some type of foam...
  6. Re: Thoughts about keeping one full honey super on all winter

Could have been; however, there was ventilation -- and that also could have added to the problem. We went through a cold period, then it warmed up and I checked them -- then it got real cold and they...
  7. Re: Thoughts about keeping one full honey super on all winter

    Interesting thread.

I left on large quantities of honey on my two hives last year and they did fine until things got cold -- here it was in the low 20's for about a week. I know that isn't cold...

Re: Gunfire in Proximity to Beeyard

I was under the impression that Bees do not "hear" sounds like we do but can perceive vibrations. I frequently weed-wack and mow in front of my hives and don't have a problem. They do run into me...

    Re: Leaving enough honey

I use mainly Russian bees in 8 frame mediums. Last year, my hives were going great until things got really cold for a few weeks and that was the end of the bees. They had easily 70 to 80 pounds of...

    Re: Leaving enough honey

Good question and one I have wondered about.

The amount to leave, I would think, would also have to include some fairly large quantities of honey in the brood chambers (on the periphery).

    I...

Best way to release queen to new nuc

I want to make a couple of 5 frame nucs. I have two new queens in cages. I will be taking frames of brood - both capped and at least one with eggs and larva as well as one of honey and one frame of...
  15. Supercedure cells, laying workers, shake out, etc. Will this work -??

    Here is the problem:

I have a top bar hive that is queenless and has gone laying worker.

I also have a new hive from a package that after 2 weeks, is queenless as there are no eggs -- however,...

Well, does anyone really know what is going on with bees and beekeepers? Spending a few million dollars on a beelab doesn't seem like a lot; however, providing good information for congress to use...

Re: transfer bees from 10 to 8 frame hive

For me, I just want to have uniform equipment. It was also encouraged in a beekeeping class I took.

I am going to keep the deeps but have considered cutting them down and using the cut off part...

I made some screened bottom boards (which I have yet to use) out of similar wood -- basically finger- joined and glued cedar strip. I think in my area it was intended to be used as molding or similar...

Re: Diagnosing. What is in these pictures?

I have frames that look similar to your frame #3 ---- I have pulled out the dead bees and they don't have deformed wings -- just dead bees.

I assume it is mite related but we did go thru a really...

  25. Medium nucs too small for sustainable plan?

I have been listening to Michael Palmers videos this winter and they make a lot of sense to me. I have some deeps but I am trying to transition to all medium 8 frame hives.

    Does it make sense...
