  1. Re: Propolis/Ederberry Tincture - and other Cures for Cancer

I know it's true the everclear stuff tastes bad, but why is it that it has to taste bad? Good booze should not be so hard to find.

I know it is possible to make a very pure ethanol product at say...

Re: How to turn wax white

If Mom wants pure white wax with no smell, then give her some paraffin wax and take your precious beeswax back. The whole point of beeswax is to appreciate it for what it IS and not try to make it...

    Re: wax spillage

Goof Off works even better than mineral spirits. I never tried turpentine, but that is pretty similar to goof off and probably works good too.

Ditto on Sheri's melt and wipe idea. I do that too....

    Re: Wax Cleanup?

Goof Off works even better than mineral spirits. Not the new evironmentally friendly formula either. Get the one that says to use in a well ventilated area.

It may dissolve the plastic though,...
  5. Re: Propolis/Ederberry Tincture - and other Cures for Cancer

I also wanted to do this kind of thing, but can't find a good source for the alcohol. Florida law says 151 proof is the max you can sell here and the only brand on the shelf at that strength is...

    Re: 600 micron filter?

I am looking for the stainless steel version of these filters. I went through this whole thread and looked at every link.

I see both Brushy Mountain and Dadant sell what they call the Double...

Re: what is wrong with this bee?

Yes that is Deformed Wing virus and it is commonly spread by Varroa. All hives have some Varroa mites, so if you only see a few bees like that it is probably not too worrisome, but if you see more...

    Re: 200 MICRON Filter

Yeah at normal room temp 200 is too small in my opinion. I use the 600 micron for most everything.

If I feel the need to go smaller, then I gotta get the honey warmed up some.

Re: Property tax agricultural exemption for bees

Nature Coast, thanks for that briefing. That was illuminating. For two reasons, both because I learned a few things - and because I appreciate now how different each state's requirements are.

    Re: Hive move advice needed

I always prepare them to move during the day, but actually move them at night so that I get ALL the bees. By moving them during the day you will lose the foragers that were out of the hive at the...

They don't accept a queen well. The africans seem to know the European queen is not their own and they kill her. I have devloped some tricks and techniques, but mostly I have determined they are...

    Re: here's a question for everyone ...........

I miss those days. Swarm traps and catching swarms was fun.

State inspector told me last year that 94% of the ones they catch are africanized now. They swarms are gentle, but once they become...

Re: can I start with a 4 box nuc hive?

As a new beekeeper I am sure you will be itching to inspect that hive fairly often.

Generally our job as beekeepers is to give the bees what they need. Not more, not less - as exactly as we can...

Re: Wanting to get the queen from a trap out. HOW?

OK, that makes sense why in my trapouts this year I caught the queen. I had put brood in the Nuc so they'd have something to make their own queen from - assuming the trap would not catch the queen....

    Moon,

I don't have Kim Flottom's Book and I'm curious what is says. I was thinking about doing something similar to get the last dregs of honey out of the cappings.

No water in my plan though....

    Re: Tree removal

No, don't move them while it is cold enough for them to cluster. If you jar the hive and break the cluster they may get too cold to regroup.

Best to close them up the night before and move them...
  18. Re: any of you have luck putting out baited swarm traps?

Yes I think you could spray the bees directly, though I've never used it that way. I take dead outs and extracted combs and clean them up and prep them for reuse.

I then spray all combs with the...
  19. Re: Requeening colony of bees in a commercial operation.....

Ted, It's a shame that you've had to resort to burning it. Did you look into irradiation? Maybe you don't have a facility near you, but they have shown that irradiation works on the CCD boxes.

    I...
  20. Re: any of you have luck putting out baited swarm traps?

Why would you want to go to the trouble of using screen anyway. Sundance's Bt spray works perfectly to protect brood comb from wax moth damage. Simple, cheap and easy to apply.

    I use it all the...
  21. Re: Swarm trap: What do you load/or not load your trap with?

  24. Re: any of you have luck putting out baited swarm traps?

Sometimes they prefer a 10 frame deep, sometimes a Nuc. Put out both if you have them. I agree with odfrank. Make sure the box is light tight with only one small opening. Higher up is better - 10...
  25. Re: How can bees be removed from a frame into a package?

I respectfully disagree with dr.buzz. I have found for new beekeepers side by side splits are trickier because many bees go home to the old hive.

If you are going to do a side by side split...
