Re: Open Feeding (Open Feeders) methods

tefer: the key is to have a large surface area for every hive you plan to feed. Any container will do. Allen uses the ones he has because they are readily available and are large.

    Barrels are...

    Re: Wax rendering

Walter Kelly used to and maybe still does sell a hydraulic wax press. Wax went in burlap sacs and was squeezed out by the press.

    Re: Wax rendering

I have seen them using steam in a dairy tank. It has always appeared as an excessively messy job. For me it seems like wax rendering is chasing the last pennies and it is associated with the...

    Re: Mark's new Honey Label

I like the label Mark. It is very likely that I never buy any of your honey, unless you came knocking at my door.

So what happens if it is a huge marketing success and you run out of honey after...

    Re: Pollen sub mixer?

My machine is on hold for now. Might get electric one after all. I could set that one up in the garage of the crew house. I have an electrician coming over Thursday to see what can be done. Low noise...

Re: Cowen uncapper modified with flails

I think Ralph is indeed pretty long in the tooth. His son is around and in the packing business. I think Ralph might be able to help if you asked nicely and were not in a hurry.:)

    Re: Pollen sub mixer?

Ian, I will send pictures. That will require that I join 2014. Not really with it when it comes to this. Working on it.

David, I figured bigger is better. Nice to hear that a 900 pound batch is...

    Re: Pollen sub mixer?

Broke down and ordered a skookum Imer 750 with the 13 hp gas motor :) Time to turn in our spades. Electricity would have been an issue. It might be slightly overkill but would hate to be under...

    Re: Pollen sub mixer?

    Mark T:

Just guessing but I think your machine can handle about 80-100 pound batches. How long does it take to mix all the ingredients once the switch is hit? 5 min? 10 min?

    I also imagine it...

    Re: Pollen sub mixer?

Sounds like a serious rig. I will have to get set up better. We just feed too much to not have good equipment to get the job done quickly. Good thing honey is $2.00 plus a pound.

    You recommend any...

    Re: Pollen sub mixer?

    Re: Ez lift hive cart

David of beebotanical.com makes one. I do not own one. Probably should. Looks like the boxes need cleats so the forks can lift under. Unfortunately that is not my case.

I am wondering why you went with the largest machine? They seem like a big chunk of change. If you were to purchase again would you get the same model and why? If they made a larger machine...

Sure I would like one or two. California is a bit of a drive. Now if you can ship then no problem... put me down for 2. Thanks for taking care of us. I did send you a private message.

What brand are you using? That sounds like it is likely a gas powered motor. Where did you get it? Cost?

  19. Re: Prairie Beekeepers Skip Fall And Dive Right Into Winter

I got a report that hives near the Edmonton area were short of pollen on account of the dry weather that mgolden writes about. This will be hard on bees to overwinter well. The shortage of pollen...

    Re: Fall feeders

I can almost guarantee it is not too cold. Bees will fly at 9-10 degrees C to open feed. Get a drum for every 12 hives for surface area. Fill to desired level. Gone in 3 days first time filled. Gone...
  21. Re: Canadian prairie and northern US honey crop outlook

B&E: we split and keep the bees in the same yard. We try to smoke the bees up and queen to the top box. We move a bit of honey and brood around to equalize them. Some bees fly to the old location....

    Re: Fall feeders

    Ben:

If the are few to no other bees around then keep open feeding. So fast, efficient and if done right very little loss of bees.

Re: How big is your honey house?

Should be large enough if you actually stick to 500 hives. That can change. I know this from personal experience. also agree with Mark B. , never big enough.

I would plan with 16 foot ceilings if...
  25. Re: Canadian prairie and northern US honey crop outlook

The bees that were sent on canola pollination came back heavy. They built a lot of foundation for us and was our second best average. Lots of bees in the hives and many have been split since coming...
