Re: Why or why not Carniolans?

My carnies winter well and are mostly gentle. I LOVE Carnies!
  2. Re: Mite Count: What is considered "high" for those who do not want to treat?

I don't treat, beyond starting packages with a quart of syrup in the beginning. I inspect, but I don't count mites. My bees are doing fine. I see the mites on my bees and they seem to be handling...

    Honey (Queen) Excluder

Well, it finally happened. I have been reading (for sevewral years now) about how sometimes the bees wont move above a queen excluder. Well, I finally experienced this personally.

    This Spring I...

    That is good advice, Danno.
  5. Re: Average haul from a hive in northern climates?

Just to be clear... my previously posted numbers do not account for the 30 pounds of honey I leave on the hives. By the time it starts freezing, they have about 50 or 60 pounds of honey stored and...

    Re: Late swarm in Wisconsin

I would feed them and hope for the best. We still have a strong goldenrod flow happening here in SW Wisconsin, not sure what Watertown looks like, but you are only a couple hours away. We still have...
  7. Re: Average haul from a hive in northern climates?

    I'm in SW Wisconsin.

I harvest an average of about 80 pounds of honey per residential hive. I live in a residential area that is about 35% agriculture, 55% Residential, and 10% wooded in about...

    Re: Foundation/Foundationless Hybrid?

Well, Edymnion, it has been well over a year. How'd those frames turn out? I'm still curious.

Re: Am I doing a stupid thing?

I like your decision. I too am treatment free. Will colonies be lost? Sure. Is it written in stone? Nope. I have yet to see evidence of CCD personally. Be generous to your bees by leaving them...
  11. Re: Recommendation on swapping top and bottom deeps?

I've observed honey throughout the hive... top, outer edges in teh middle and low. I let me ladies do what they do. In Spring, I'll move the top box to the bottom ONLY after the top box is full of...

She looks like a carniolan. That would be my guess.

    Re: Hive bodies

Know the source. I received many of my boxes from my Father-in-law, and others I have purchased from Mann Lake and constructed myself. Again, I have to emphasize the importance of knowing the...

    Re: 3 deep brood hives

My three deeps have the top deep almost 75% full of honey by this time of the year. Its a great problem to have. I NEVER have to feed after the hive gets going. Once a new package is installed,...

    Re: Slatted Rack

I've noticed that the bees will use (stores and such) the comb a little bit lower in the bottom box if it has a slatted rack. The difference is minimal, but its there. This may be due to the extra...

  17. Re: What's the general consensus on insulating for winter?

    Nicely said, Smith.
  18. Re: What's the general consensus on insulating for winter?

I add mouse guards in fall and leave them plenty of honey to make it through winter. My bees are already protected from the northern and western winds. Other than that - I do nothing.

    Good luck!

Re: What's everyone using for TREAMENTS??

I have never and continue to not treat my bees with medications. When I start a hive from a package, I feed them sugar water and a pollen patty, just to get them going. Thats it. Once the hive has...

    Re: Reaction to Bee Stings

I wouldn't worry too much. I have been stung several times and thankfully I'm not allergic (yet); however, several of my relatives are. My Doctor told me to be aware of changes in heart-rate,...

I'm looking forward to hearing more about this. I may have to try this in some of my hives.
