    Re: Which feeders

I have used both deep frame and hive top feeders.
I tried the first frame feeder without ladders and had a lot of drowned bees, with the ladders there are few.
I had trouble with the syrup...
  2. Re: Bees are gone and now what to do with beehive for winter?

    +1

I would spray the empty combs with BT prior to storage. In my area that is good enough to kee the wax moth larva from messing up your comb.

    Re: Slatted Racks.......

I think everybody has it covered here. I would like to mention also on the Betterbee parallel slatted rack there is a solid wood piece that is oriented towards the hive entrance that is designed to...

    Re: ? swarm

Boy is there a lot of truth in that statement! We are observers. I often do not locate a queen so I look for evidence like brood and eggs. This time of year it is hard to interpret between...

    Re: Help! Weakened hive

A big part of learning how to keep bees in your particular climate and specifically in your apiary is through trial and error. If you save them, good if not then lesson learned. You would likely have...

    Re: Remember I am newBEE

I am pretty new too, a self proclaimed hobbyist in fact. I am pretty certain that a queen cell that is open from the side has either been torn down, or, maybe when you separated the frames it was...
  11. Re: My first 95 days as a beekeep, where did I go wrong? What's the prognosis?

If you are getting robbed there are several indicators, two that I look for are that you will see that your honey cells are torn open in haste and left with rough edges and a lot of capping crumbs in...
  12. Re: Bees in a bunch under the hive (and how it differs from a swarm)

Good news! The bees seem to work things out without our intervention.
  13. Re: Bees in a bunch under the hive (and how it differs from a swarm)

This time of year my hives see 100*+ outside temperatures and the beard up good. Sometimes covering the front of the hive as well. They wait until after dark sometimes to go inside. With evening...
  14. Re: Bee-Pro pollen substitute from Mann Lake plus other ????'s

If you want to try something different, I open fed this dry recipe I found on Besource in July. Soy flour, nutritional yeast and nonfat dry milk in a 4:1:1 ratio. I placed the feeder across the yard...

    Re: Bees clumping in greenhouse

Perhaps in the late evening you could draw the bees to a light placed outside the greenhouse door? They may find their way home then, maybe.
If the bees in your empty hive have moved in you will...

  17. Re: Install of Package Bees using "Hansen Method" Bees not leaving package

    Hey John.
I have not used this method but I have installed several packages by leaving the box in a single deep with only four or five frames and the queen cage between the remaining frames of comb...

Re: My Bees Survived - What to do?

Not too close. might only be a problem if you are using telescoping outer covers. If the bees are out flying you can do an inspection. Get the survivor hives into just the necessary equipment, one or...

Re: Upper entrance for migratory cover

I ended up using a standard inner cover with a 2" notch under the migratory cover for now. Two of my five hives use the upper entrances exclusively and the others either use both or just the bottom...

    Re: Entrance reducer

The reduced entrances are for the hive to have a smaller area to defend when necessary. The smallest opening only takes one bee to defend but creates a traffic jam. It is good to use when other...

Tom, I have also used the screened inner covers, also called moving screens, with a migratory outer but only for ventilation. I am concerned that they might get flimsy if I notched them. How are...

Re: Open Brood Nest without Drawn Comb

I do it all of the time by alternating foundation only frames between brood frames. It actually helps to get the new comb drawn nice and straight, using the brood comb for guides.
  25. Re: Cluster still in package hours after hiving the rest

You could remove several frames and set the cage inside of the hive. They will be out by morning and you can remove the empty box. I only recommend this if your queen has not been uncorked yet...
