  1. Re: Attach foundation using only wax as fastener under the top bar?

    Thanks very much Bernard.

I will then add the middle bar. I hope that's enough.

I've just saw FatBeeMan's fishing line method. Nice.
  2. Re: Attach foundation using only wax as fastener under the top bar?

I'm aware of that that is why I've asked. I assume bees won't pay a special attention to further fasten the top. Would they? Only experience can tell. I built very simple frames, some of them I'll...
  3. Attach foundation using only wax as fastener under the top bar?

    Anyone has ever tried this?

I'm so lazy and have so little time. I promise I'll be carefull when do the inspections :)

I'm using deep frames. I made a test and it holds fine. I don't know how...

    Re: My Cell Building Methods

    Thanks.

I should probably bank the cells in case I have a good percentage of acceptance in order to have a backup for later failure.
  5. Re: Overwintering singles (when and where to add the second brood box)

I've done some checkerboarding again yesterday. The amount of bees is overwhelming for me and there are still plenty left to hatch.
I've seen many patches of drone cells and lots of nice drones on...

    Re: My Cell Building Methods

    Stupid question:

What's the average rate of succes starting from accepted graft to the final product - the mated queen? I mean how many cells should I preapare, in order to get a given number of...

    Re: My Cell Building Methods

Actually I did some dividers yesterday... no big deal; also did some 2x2 nucs and a robber screen.

Does robber screens interfere with the virgin queen ability to find the entrance back into the...

    Re: Foundationless Frames

I started to build frames like this one:

    http://daveybees.wdfiles.com/local--files/frames/HomemadeFrame.jpg

They are very easy to do.

I make the wax starters warre style. It's very fast and...

    Re: against the tide

My area might have a big advantage regarding this matter.

I noticed last summer a total brood break on both my hives at the end of August and all September. At that time mite counts were under 2%....

    against the tide

Yesterday while reading a topic about queen rearing I ran into Kirk Webster site with articles and some videos from some finish guy that had visited him. It's amazing to see people who think so...

    Re: My Cell Building Methods

    About the mating nucs:

Could anyone use standard 10 framers? Does it harm to have more space then necesary? Should I bother in making division boards to isolate the unused space or just add frames...

    Re: My Cell Building Methods

    ------------------------------------------------------------
day -9 sealed brood and queen go in bottom brood box
unsealed and extra frames of pollen and honey go above the excluder in top...
  13. Re: Will queen naturally move down into empty bottom deep?

    Try this:

    http://daveybees.wikidot.com/openingthesides

It will accelarate comb building and moving into the upper box after rotating them.
  14. Re: Overwintering singles (when and where to add the second brood box)

    Thanks. Beginner's luck :)

I lack this experience in measuring and timing and try to get it right from the begining. Bees are expensive.
  15. Q. on starter/finisher manipulations

This season I plan do do some queens(~20) and it's my first time.
I wanted to use the cloacke board method but I don't know if there will be enough bees for that method.

    Anyway I was thinking on...
  16. Re: Overwintering singles (when and where to add the second brood box)

Regarding adding new space I've heard Michael Palmer said sm. like doubling the amount of space, as nectar has much more water than honey and the bees need that big space where to store it in the...

I couldn't wait till next week and opened the hive today. The result really blasted my worries appart.

  19. Re: Overwintering singles (when and where to add the second brood box)

I will check on Tuesday or so.
All the brood is in the lower chamber. The temperatures are higher now and the fruit trees and dandelions are starting to bloom. I'll try to make some pics also.
  20. Re: Overwintering singles (when and where to add the second brood box)

I just moved the outside honey frames above not the brood.

    ...and now have smt like:

    FFHFHFHF
    BFBBBBFB

I used foundation as that was available. I will use empty frames in the future, just...

Re: How to feed and avoid robbing

I haven't thought of that but it is a very good idea to put them right on start. This way home bees will quicly learn the trick. Thanks

Re: How to feed and avoid robbing

Then I'm relieved. I live where I have the bees and have bees where I live :)
Probably this is the way in my case: provide only the amount of syrup that can be sucked until morning.

Re: How to feed and avoid robbing

    Thanks.

If I feed only during the night does the syrup stored in frames attract robbers more then the natural nectar?

Re: How to feed and avoid robbing

8 frames of brood and lots of pollen in one and less in the other. They are booming indeed but don't have a real nectar flow yet.

Did you start adding foundation to the sides of the brood nest?

Re: How to feed and avoid robbing

I see no difference between the two feeding options. The jar that I use penetrates the crown board and the holes are right above the frames (7 holes)

Do you put the right amount so that they...
