Re: My recipe/method for sugar blocks

Seeing those pics makes me think I better check mine on the next available day. They may go through this much faster than I expected. We've had bitter cold temps here in KS the last couple weeks.

    Re: Unsure of next move

thanks for the clarification on the sugars. Never occurred to me to substitute brown or powdered, so that's not a problem here.
We do get warm days in Jan & Feb, so I will definitely be taking a...

    Unsure of next move

First let me say I did not get my bees checked in October, so I didn't realize they were light of food until Nov. We had nice 50+ weather, so we put feeders on and made fall syrup. I got about 1.5...
  7. Re: Did I do this right? - Winterization West Central IL

I think our upper hole was 1/2 or 3/4 inch. Just whatever size we had handy.
  8. Re: Did I do this right? - Winterization West Central IL

Last winter I would be pretty convinced it was due to starvation. The times before that, I was so new at it, that I really didn't have any idea.
  9. Re: Did I do this right? - Winterization West Central IL

thanks for your reply. I used a top entrance this summer and it seemed the bees liked it, at least they brought in a lot of honey. We just used a hole saw and made a circular hole in the top. ...

Thanks for posting this diagram. I got on here today to ask about placement of the popsicle stick. I was feeling dense. I think I understand now how to place them. Do you use just one on one...

    SC hive stalling out?

We started a new package of bees this spring on SC. I haven't been really happy with the queen in this hive. They drew out most of the 2 brood boxes and then moved up into a super and put brood in...

    Re: Regression hitches...

I would be glad to leave a super on. I did that last year with two hives and they didn't really touch it. One of the hives even died. ?? So it seemed a bit of a waste to leave them on there.

    Regression hitches...

Beginning this spring we decided to switch our brood frames to the Mann Lake small cell plastic frames.
Starting with two hives, #1 was booming, so we put 4 frames of brood into a new box, filled...

Re: How do we get our hive back?

Yes, we are trying to get them back home.

I was wondering if smoking them would push them into the hive. I guess if all else fails, we'll wait until it's raining to bring them home.
    I will...

How do we get our hive back?

We made a split. Took the split to a friend's house. The split was 5 frames, at least one of completely capped brood and the rest was brood in various stages. We added a new purchased queen. ...

Re: Bees keep leaving the hive

It sounds like the LGO is the problem. I will ask her how much she used and if she has one that is not sprayed she can try again with.
Thanks for all the replies and suggestions.

Re: Bees keep leaving the hive

I guess the lemongrass oil is sometimes recommended to entice a swarm to stay. I've read about it, too, but haven't used it. I didn't ask her exactly where she sprayed it, I just assumed inside.

Re: Why do the bees keep leaving?

    B) The first time she thought they were too hot because she forgot to open the bottom. With the second one, the bottom was opened (screened bottom), so I don't think that was it. She got the swarm...
